Our betting expert, Jack Wright, is on hand with an Everton vs Aston Villa prediction and football betting tips preview in Sunday’s Premier League match-up on January 14th.

Both sides need points for very different reasons, as the prospect of Champions League football flirts with Villa, and Championship football becomes more vivid following a points deduction on Merseyside, making this game much harder to predict than what the league table implies.

Everton vs Aston Villa Tip 1: Hard-fought three points

England, Premier League, Saturday, January 1st, 17:30 (UK)

Aston Villa have suffered just one defeat in the last 13 games in all competitions, and that came at Old Trafford where they blew a 2-0 lead.

They also have a great record in the head-to-head stats. They have won each of the last five league meetings with no defeat against the Toffees since 2016.

Considering Everton is one place above the drop zone and Villa in 2nd, you would think the visitors would be big odds-on favourite to be the winner of the match. That is not the case, as the hosts will make it tough for them.

When looking at this season’s stats, it is a surprise to see Sean Dyche’s side have lost six of their 10 league games at Goodison Park. The Villains can add another defeat to that number by securing a narrow win.

  • Everton vs Aston Villa Tip 1: Aston Villa Win
  • Best Odds: 2.45
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 7/10

Everton vs Aston Villa Tip 2: Merseyside Blue to see Red

This game promises to be a feisty one. Everton are scrapping for their lives just one place and a point above the drop zone. Villa are unexpectedly in the title race, sitting in 2nd, just three points behind leaders Liverpool.

There have been 31 cards in the last five head-to-head meetings with seven in both the reverse fixture in August and the League Cup tie in September. There have been four red cards in the last seven Villa away league games.

David Coote, the referee for this game, has shown three red cards in his eight Premier League games this season. He sent off a player from each side the last time he was in charge of an Aston Villa game. He also dismissed a player from each side here at Goodison Park at the end of last season, with Tottenham as the visiting side.

  • Everton vs Aston Villa Tip 2: Red Card in the Match
  • Best Odds: 4.50
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 3/10

Everton vs Aston Villa Tip 3: Watkins as Villain’s hero

My Everton vs Aston Villa predictions would be incomplete without mentioning Ollie Watkins in my tips. The 28-year-old has had a superb first half of the season with 17 goal contributions (9 goals, 8 assists). This has only been surpassed by Erling Haaland (18) and Mo Salah (22).

Villa thumped Everton 4-0 in the reverse fixture and Watkins missed out. He will be keen to make his mark this time.

The England international scored his last two away goals in the 85th and 90+ minutes against Bournemouth and Brentford. He has hit the back of the net in four road trips this campaign, with an average goal time of 77 minutes. So, I wouldn’t put anyone off backing a Villa/Watkins goal in the dying embers of the game, whether that be pre-match on in-play at a big price.

  • Everton vs Aston Villa Tip 3: Ollie Watkins to Score Anytime (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.50
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 10/10

Everton vs Aston Villa OPTA Stats Preview: A Barnstorming 2023

  • Aston Villa won 85 points in the Premier League in 2023, second only to Manchester City (93). Their 26 league wins last year were the second-most in one year in their league history, only winning more in 1972 (28) when they were playing in the second and third tiers of English football.
Unai Emery is currently averaging 2.02 points-per-game in the Premier League with Aston Villa (91 points in 45 games). He is currently the only manager in Premier League history to manage 40+ games with a club and have an average of two or more points-per-game but not to have won the title with that side.
  • Since Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of Everton in February 2023, James Tarkowski has blocked more shots (62) than any other player, has made the second-most clearances (174) and third-most headed clearances (98). Indeed, between 2017-18 and Dyche’s last game at Burnley in April 2022, Tarkowski topped all three metrics in the competition (236 blocks, 967 clearances, 571 headed clearances).
  • Everton have lost each of their last three Premier League games; the Toffees haven’t lost four in a row since March 2022 under Frank Lampard, while manager Sean Dyche last did so in April 2022 as Burnley boss.
