Matthew O’Regan is on hand with his Everton vs Sheffield United prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview. It is a Premier League dead rubber for both sides, but with it being the penultimate game for both sides, the Toffees and the Blades will be keen to ensure they end the season with some wins.
In this article:
England, Premier League, Saturday, May 11th, 15:00 (UK)
In what has been a dismal season for Sheffield United, the loan signing of Ben Brereton Diaz has been a rare shining light. The 25-year-old has scored six goals in 12 appearances, despite the Blades failing to win any league game that he has been involved in.
In these 12 games, the Chilean has hit 30 shots, for an average of 2.84 shots and 1.80 shots per 90 this season. In the last 6 games he’s hit 4(2), 5(3), 4(2), 4(3), 2(1), and 2(1) shots and shots on target, including goals against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest in the last three games.
With Sheffield United winning just three games all season and this being a dead rubber, Chris Wilder should instruct his side to attack, with Ben Brereton Diaz the main attacking threat.
Over the years, Sheffield United have become renowned for their overlapping wing-backs, with Jayden Bogle making this role his own this season.
The 23-year-old has had 31 shots from 30 starts, for an average of 1.07 shots per 90. However, in recent weeks his shot volume has increased tenfold.
The wingback has registered a shot in his last nine games and at least two shots in six of these.
Everton have conceded a shot to a full back/wingback in five of their last six games, with Ashley Young lacking pace to track marauding wingbacks.
Again, like Brereton Diaz, Bogle has been a shining light in a catastrophic Sheffield United season. The 23-year-old will wanna end his season with a bang.
A run of four straight home wins for Everton saw the Toffees safe. Everton overcame Burnley, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Brentford en route to securing safety, before battling to a point at Luton. While only Saturday’s opponents have scored fewer goals than Everton’s 38, the hosts can take solace from the fact that Sheffield United have conceded a record breaking 100 goals already this season, for an average of 2.77 goals per game.
The Blades have conceded at least two goals in their last ten games, averaging 3.6 goals against in this period.
Everton have only drawn an average of 1.53 yellows per game. Only Sheffield United (1.42) have drawn fewer. Refereeing this encounter is Stuart Atwell. While the 41-year-old is averaging 4.45 cards per game, he has shown under 3 cards in 7 of his 24 matches this year.
Due to the nature of a lot of Sheffield United defeats, games are often low-carding due to the game state. Heading into a dead-rubber against a side who also don’t draw many cards, we should see a low-carding affair.
