Friday Night Football Acca: January 20th

The action comes thick and fast this Friday. There is a smörgåsbord of fixtures across Europe’s top leagues to delve into. So having cast my eye over the ties, I have picked out my three best bets. Putting them together for a bettingexpert Friday night acca. Games in England, Spain and France made the cut.

In this article:

Burnley vs West Brom Preview

England, Championship, Friday, January 20th, 20:00 (UK)

The sides topping the form table over the last 10 games collide at Turf Moor this Friday evening. This really is a mouth-watering Championship clash between two of the pre-season favourites for promotion.

Burnley have shown incredible consistency throughout the campaign so far. A fact highlighted by the 16-point cushion they enjoy over 3rd placed Watford. Two defeats all season and nine wins from their last ten league games make the Clarets worthy favourites for this tie. Not only that they are priced as low as 1.33 to win the title and seal an immediate return to the top flight.

In contrast, West Brom have had to turn their season around to find themselves occupying the final play-off place. The upturn in fortunes has coincided with the appointment of Carlos Corberán as manager. Taking over with the club in 23rd the Spaniard lost his first game in charge. Subsequently winning 10 of the next 11 Championship assignments. A win for his rotated side over Chesterfield this week also secured a place in the FA Cup fourth round.

Burnley vs West Brom Best Bet

Vincent Kompany’s side boast the only unbeaten home record in the Championship this term. Winning ten of their 14 outings at Turf Moor. A late Jordan Beyer header was enough to register their latest win with the only goal of the game against a stubborn Coventry side at the weekend.

The Baggies will prove a stern test. Matching the hosts’ haul of 27 points from the last 30 on offer in the league. With just 10 minutes on the clock they found themselves 2-0 down at Luton on Saturday but will not be able to afford the champions-elect such a head start. Taking the home side double chance is an obvious but solid start to a builder.

Daryl Dike was the man who started the comeback at Kenilworth Road. Nine goals in 19 games for Barnsley showed what the USA international could do at this level. Having had an injury-plagued start to his time with West Brom he is determined to make up for lost time. The 22-year-old will also look to make the most of Brandon Thomas-Asante’s absence serving the last of his three-game suspension.

Rested for the midweek cup success over Chesterfield, expect Dike to return to the starting lineup here. A combination of a 20-game injury layoff and sharing striking responsibilities with Thomas-Asante has limited Dike to 367 minutes of Championship action this term. However, having fired off 16 shots in that time on the pitch his output still catches the eye. Averaging an attempt at goal every 23 minutes or a fraction under four per 90. Adding over 1.5 Dike shots brings the builder to an attractive 1.90 odds.

  • Selection: Burnley or Draw and over 1.5 Daryl Dike shots
  • Best Odds: 1.90 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Mallorca vs Celta Vigo Preview

Spain, La Liga, Friday, January 20th, 20:00 (UK)

Mallorca couldn’t be any more mid-table. Sitting in 10th of 20 in the Spanish top flight, six points from the Champions League places. With the same number separating them from the relegation zone. Javier Aguirre’s side suffered a 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday night meaning they now only have the league to concentrate on. With fixtures against Real Madrid and Villarreal on the horizon, the Pirates will be keen to add to their points tally here following successive defeats.

Despite lying in 16th just one point outside the drop zone Vigo arrive unbeaten in their last four La Liga fixtures. Having been knocked out of the Copa del Rey at the beginning of the month the Sky Blues have had no midweek engagement. They will look to make the most of the four extra days of recovery time they have over their opponents.

Mallorca vs Celta Vigo Best Bet

Mallorca were recently described by their own manager as “hard working” and “very organised”. Their solid campaign so far has been built on their miserly defence. Only three sides have conceded fewer than their 16 goals in the top flight. But with just 14 strikes of their own only three sides have scored fewer. Each of those outfits are currently in the bottom 4.

For his part, Carlos Carvalhal has tightened up the visitors’ defence since his arrival. Allowing just four goals in the first five league games of his stewardship. A huge improvement on former boss Eduardo Coudet who saw his Vigo side ship an alarming 24 times in the opening 12 La Liga fixtures.

At the other end, they have still failed to score more than one goal in any of their last 13 in the league. Mallorca have seen under 2.5 goals land in 11 of their last 12 league outings including each of the last six. Each of the last four Celta games in the top flight have seen two or fewer goals. As a result the under 2.5 line here is understandably short but one that can be played as half of a builder.

The other half will be made up of Iago Aspas to have a shot on target. The Sky Blues continue to lean on their veteran forward. The 35-year-old has bagged nearly half (8) of his side’s 17 league goals this term. He was kept off the scoresheet in the 1-1 draw with Villarreal last week. But once again managed a shot on target. A tenth match in succession where he has done so. The former Spanish international has only failed to register an attempt on target once when starting for his club this season.

  • Selection: Under 3 goals and Iago Aspas over 0.5 shots on target
  • Best Odds: 2.37 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Marseille vs Rennes Preview

France, Coupe de France, Friday, January 20th, 20:15 (UK)

There is an all-Ligue 1 clash at the Stade Velodrome with a place in the last 16 of the Coupe de France up for grabs. Both sides come into this tie buoyed by impressive league victories last weekend. Marseille came from behind to beat Lorient 3-1. Rennes limited PSG to a solitary shot on target in defeating the French champions 1-0 at Roazhon Park.
Les Olympiens have been impeccable since returning to action following the World Cup break. They have won all five competitive fixtures and with a goal difference of +12 for good measure.

Last weekend’s win for Bruno Genesio’s men was made even more impressive given the major injury blow. Top goalscorer Martin Terrier will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury. Rennes’ backline, manned by Arthur Theate, performed superbly against the Parisians. They will have to put in a repeat performance against the free-scoring hosts if they are to keep their cup dreams alive.

Marseille vs Rennes Best Bet

Igor Tudor has turned the tide at Marseille. For now at least. He has seen his side rack up seven successive competitive wins either side of the World Cup. Victorious in their last four at home by an aggregate scoreline of 12-2. Key to this is scoring goals from all over the pitch. Defenders have contributed 14 strikes in Ligue 1 alone. Sead Kolašinac scored his third goal in five league games with the equaliser at the weekend. Having previously not scored since February 2021.

Les Rouges et Noir have also struggled on the road since returning to action. Losing both league games and shipping five goals in the process. Stade Velodrome hasn’t been the happiest of hunting grounds either with no success in the last five visits. The loss of Terrier could be crucial and it will be difficult to replicate the performance in beating PSG. Especially on the road at an in-form team such as Marseille. Odds of 2.10 for the home side to come out on top is definite value.

  • Selection: Marseille to win
  • Best Odds: 2.25 (Coral)
  • Stakes: 7/10
