England, Premier League, Saturday, April 27th 15:00
After a poor start to the season under Roy Hogdson, Crystal Palace were deep in a relegation battle. However, the appointment of Oliver Glasner has completely transformed their season.
In the Germans nine games in charge, Palace have won four, lost three and drew two. Three of these victories have come in the last three, shocking Liverpool at Anfield, destroying West Ham and comfortably dispatching Newcastle.
This has given the Eagles brief hopes of finishing in the top half, a far cry from their relegation battle earlier in the season.
After just one win in five games, Fulham are now just one place and three points ahead of Saturday’s visitors. Marco Silva’s side’s faint hope of European qualification has dwindled, and the season has now gone stale.
The Whites have been defensively fragile, conceding 54 goals in 34. Playing against a rejuvenated Crystal Palace side, Fulham are in for a tough ask to half their poor run of form.
It has been some week for Jean-Philippe Mateta. The 26-year-old had struggled in his early days at Crystal Palace, but back-to-back braces has seen him reach 11 goals.
Crystal Palace’s season has flipped on his heads, going from the turgid, stale football under Roy Hodgson to mesmerising, front-footed football under Oliver Glasner has seen Mateta’s output improve drastically.
In Glasner’s nine games in charge, Mateta has scored eight goals, from a combined xG of 5.24 and 21 shots.
With back-to-back braces and now facing a Fulham side who have conceded 54 goals, Mateta will fancy his chances of adding to his ever-growing goal tally.
The return of star man Michael Olise has provided a major boost. The 22-year-old is one of the best players outside the top six, and the Frenchman showcased his brilliance in a silky display in the famous Anfield win, before scoring and assisting in his 68 minutes played in the 5-2 drubbing of West Ham. He was benched in the win over Newcastle, so should be trusted from the start against Fulham.
Injuries have made it a stop-start season for Olise. He returned off the bench in the 4-1 humiliation at rivals Brighton but came off injured minutes later. While Olise has only managed ten starts this season, he still boasts seven goals and four assists.
Per 90, he is averaging 3.54 shots, with 1.18 on target. His last seven starts have seen 2(1), 4(1), 6(3), 6(3), 2(0), 2(1), and 4(2) shots, with a game against Brighton in which the visitors dominated the only time he hasn’t had a shot on target.
Against a Fulham side conceding over five shots on target per game, Michael Olise should have opportunities to pepper shots.
Crystal Palace vs Fulham Prediction odds via bet365 as at 10:30, April 24, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Fulham are blessed on the injury front, with only Willian out injured.
Palace have struggled massively with injuries this season. Ebe Eze and Michael Olise have missed large chunks of the season, but Glasner will be delighted to have the dynamic duo back fit and firing. However, he is still without midfielders Cheick Doucoure and Chris Richards, as well as goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and centre back Marc Guehi.
Olise was rested against Newcastle, but he is expected to start.
Fulham possible starting lineup:
Leno; Castagne, Adarabioyo, Bassey, Robinson; Palhinha, Lukic; Wilson, Pereira, Iwobi; Muniz
Crystal Palace possible starting lineup:
Henderson; Clyne, Anderson, Richards; Munoz, Wharton, Hughes, Mitchell; Eze, Olise; Mateta
