The La Liga match between Girona vs Sevilla takes place on Sunday night. The hosts are leading the way at the time of writing. Sevilla aren’t performing well at all, they’re just a single point above the relegation zone after 20 matches.
Tom Winch has taken a closer look at the clash taking place at Estadio Municipal de Montilivi. He’s provided us with three betting tips, alongside plenty of stats and facts.
In this article:
Spain, La Liga, Sunday, January 21st, 20:00 (UK)
Artem Dovbyk has scored 11 times for Girona this term. Only three players across the whole division have bagged a greater amount than the Ukrainian. Dovbyk has started 15 of 19 matches for Girona this season after his move from Dnipro-1, and there’s no reason he’ll start on the bench on Sunday night.
Girona have been immense throughout the entire 23/24 campaign. They’re the highest scorers in La Liga and are certainly in a title race, although their most recent clash with Almeria wasn’t exactly inspiring.
I expect a huge lift in performance from the hosts at Estadio Municipal de Montilivi with Artem Dovbyk getting himself on the scoresheet. The 26-year-old has averaged a goal every 107 minutes for his new club and should be licking his lips as he goes up against a defence that managed just three clean sheets all season.
The home side is priced at 1.66 to score two goals, which is probably about right. Artem Dovbyk will get chances in this matchup against a Sevilla side that have been far from their best over the last couple of seasons.
In Dovbyk’s previous 66 league appearances across the Ukrainian Premier League and La Liga, he’s bagged 49 times. The odds are against him scoring here, a price worth considering.
Girona have claimed maximum points in 15 of their 20 La Liga matches in 23/24, a staggering return. Michel’s side has been the surprise package across Europe this term, being at the top of the table at the halfway stage of the season.
The hosts have won eight of ten home matches this season, they drew to a stubborn Athletic Club and lost 3-0 to Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid at the end of September. Girona played their part in both of those matches; they had opportunities early on against Real, and it could’ve been a different outcome if they buried one of their early chances.
Sevilla have been underwhelming for a while now. They’ve won just three times in 20 La Liga matches this term and have picked up just six points from a possible 27 on the road. Quique Sanchez Flores’ side is ranked amongst the bottom five for xG.
The visitors have won just once in their previous 14 matches in the league, which includes five defeats across their last six. Sevilla’s leading scorer, Youssef En Nesyri will be unavailable. The Moroccan is away on national duty at AFCON. His absence will be a huge blow, as his side lacks serious firepower.
I expect the hosts to have some joy here. They’ll want to put their goalless draw with Almeria behind them with a victory at home. Girona won the reverse clash 2-1, and a similar scoreline is expected. They’ve beaten both Barcelona and Atletico in recent weeks, so they shouldn’t fear a weakened Sevilla side.
I’m combining two picks for my final selection for this clash. The stats are strong, and they come out at an appealing price.
Girona have scored after the break in nine of their ten games at home this season. Only Real Madrid have prevented Michel’s side from doing so. They’re an energetic side with plenty of chances and they keep going until the final whistle.
Sevilla are poor, really poor, I just don’t see where the goals will come from. They’ve scored just ten times in nine away games this season. Eight of those goals came in three separate away days, which came against Alaves (3), Cadiz (2) and Granada (3). The latter two sit in the relegation zone.
Overall, Sevilla have scored two or more goals in six of their 20 matches. They’re without their biggest goal threat in Youssef En Nesyri, a bonus for us regarding this selection. Girona have conceded multiple times in seven matches this season. Three of those came against Barca, Atletico and Real Madrid.
Sevilla will give the home side respect; they’ll allow them the ball and will aim to keep them out for as long as they possibly can. At some point, I expect the hosts to find a breakthrough, which could well arrive in the second half of this encounter.
Girona vs Sevilla Prediction odds via bet365 as at 15:00, January 16th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Girona will be without Aleix Garcia. The midfielder was sent off in their 0-0 draw last weekend. Savio and Viktor Tsygankov both came off the bench against Almeria. The latter has been out injured for a few weeks. The talented duo could well start on Sunday behind Artem Dovbyk.
Youssef En Nesyri is on international duty with Morocco, and his goal threat will be a big miss. Erik Lamela and Marcos Acuna are doubts. Nemanja Gudelj will miss this clash due to a knee injury. Ocampos is set to lead the attack, and Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Ramos will provide plenty of experience. It’s an underwhelming side suffering with plenty of absentees.
