Greece has the advantage as the hosts, who are unbeaten on home soil since 2022. Yet, this Kazakhstan ensemble is not one to be taken lightly. Greece vs Kazakhstan Prediction 1: Hosts to hold their own

Athens, Euro 2024 qualification, Thursday, March 21st, 19:45 (UK)

The 2004 champions will be desperate to return to the Euros, and expectations are high for their potential route.

Although they weren’t able to sneak into the top two during their group stage, it wasn’t exactly expected with both France and the Netherlands being present.

However, two comfortable results over Ireland, their closest rivals, kept them at arm’s length and deservedly moved into the next round. Greece almost held the Netherlands at home, only for the visitors to nick all three points with a last gasp penalty.

Yet Greece did cause an upset when holding France 2-2 in Athens, who went toe to toe with one of the best nations in the world.

Their opponents aren’t without hope, but defeats on the road to Slovenia and Denmark in their group showcased far more limitations than the hosts.

Previous defeats in friendlies to Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and UAE away from home aren’t convincing, and Greece will know they have a golden opportunity to progress to the next round, especially when playing at home.

Striker Fotis Ioannidis also arrives into this fixture in fine form, having scored in his last three matches for Panathinaikos and is likely to lead the line.

  • Greece vs Kazakhstan Prediction 1: Greece and Under 3.5 Goals
  • Best Odds: 1.83

  • Stake: 7/10

Greece vs Kazakhstan Prediction 2: Visitors won’t bow out quietly

With either Georgia or Luxembourg awaiting either Greece or Kazakhstan in the final qualifying round, both sides here will fancy their chances of appearing at Euro 2024.

With that appearance at stake, the visitors have perhaps been slightly underestimated about getting on the scoresheet.

Having scored against every opponent on the road in the group stage, Kazakhstan outscored Denmark in their travels.

In fact, they also beat Finland 2-1 in their own backyard, a nation that only conceded three goals on home soil—the other was a narrow 1-0 defeat to Denmark.

Besiktas’ Bakhtiyor Zaynutdinov was the man responsible for the two goals in Finland, who was their top goalscorer during the group stage with four. Greece will need to keep him quiet if they are to keep a clean sheet.

Greece scored against everyone in their group aside from the Netherlands. However, a more attacking approach saw them draw 2-2 with France in their final game.

With so much on the line, expect defensives to be tested and if an early goal falls the way of the hosts, don’t expect Kazakhstan to roll over.

  • Greece vs Kazakhstan Prediction 2: BTTS – Yes
  • Best Odds: 2.50
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 7/10

Greece vs Kazakhstan Prediction 3: A second half to saviour

As mentioned, Kazakhstan is not a nation to freeze on the road – especially against far bigger nations.

Although they lost on the road to Slovenia and Denmark, they didn’t move away from their attacking approach – in particular in the second half – getting on the scoresheet in both matches.

In fact, diving a little deeper, Kazakhstan scored in the second half in all of their five away matches in the group stage. Whether chasing a result or looking for a consolation goal, Kazakhstan didn’t back down.

With Greece conceding second-half goals vs France and the Netherlands, as well as expected to win this match, the visitors may make it a nervy ending to the game with the second-half strike.

  • Greece vs Kazakhstan Prediction 3: Kazakhstan to Score Second Half
  • Best Odds: 3.25
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 6/10

Greece vs Kazakhstan Team News and Possible Lineups: Concerns for hosts

Cagliari’s Pantelis Hatzidiakos hasn’t featured of late due to injury but returned to the bench vs Salernitana on 9th March. He is a starter for Greece, but it may be a risk for him to start if he isn’t 100%.

Between the sticks, Odysseas Vlachodimos has failed to impress at Nottingham Forest and hasn’t featured since January in the FA Cup. A lack of match fitness is a little concerning.

Kazakhstan appears to have no fresh injury concerns heading into the match despite a couple of players, Nuraly Alip and Islambek Kuat, not getting regular minutes at the club level.

Greece possible starting lineup: Vlachodimos; Hatzidiakos, Mavropanos, Retsos, Giannoulis, Galanopoulos, Bouchalakis, Bakasetas, Rota, Masouras, Ioannidis

Kazakhstan possible starting lineup: Shatskly; Slip, Marochkin, Bystrov, Vorogovskiy, Tagybergen, Beysebekov, Zaynutdinov, Kairov, Orazov, Samorodov

Match Stats: Goals could be on the cards

  • This will be their first meeting since 2006, where Greece came out on top 2-0.
  • Kazakhstan scored in all five away matches during their group qualifying.
  • Greece picked up seven points at home, including a 2-2 draw vs France.
