As we countdown to the start of the Premier League season, Fantasy Premier League managers are setting up their sides for Gameweek 1. Here’s the top picks you should be selecting for your FPL teams and the Betting Expert recommendations for the weekend.

In this article:

  • FPL Goalkeeper Must-Pick
  • FPL Defender Must-Pick
  • FPL Midfielder Must-Pick
  • FPL Forward Must-Pick

All odds quoted are correct as at 9.00 on 4th August 2022. Odds may now differ.

FPL Goalkeeper Must-Pick

Edouard Mendy (£5.0m)

Chelsea are 1.73 to beat Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday: it’s a kind opening fixture for the Blues against Frank Lampard’s side who at one point looked like they may be relegated last season: there’s plenty of history there too!

Chelsea kept 16 clean sheets last season, with Edouard Mendy having a hand in 14 of them. Chelsea are available at 2.88 here to win to nil. Antonio Rudiger’s transfer to Real Madrid was a big loss, but they have since strengthened with the arrival of Kalidou Koulibaly.

Mendy was among the top goalkeepers in terms of his save percentage last season: 73.7% put him fourth among Premier League goalkeepers. My score prediction is 1-0 to Chelsea, which can be backed right now at 7.50.

FPL Defender Must-Pick

Kieran Trippier (£5.0m)

Newcastle United are big favourites for their opening home game of the season against promoted Nottingham Forest, at 1.71. It’s a huge first full season for the Magpies under their new ownership, with plenty of new players on the scene.

Newcastle United were among the top defences in the Premier League so far in 2022 under Eddie Howe, conceding just 20 goals and keeping seven clean sheets in 18 games. They are 13/8 to win to nil at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Kieran Trippier is a fantastic fantasy asset in the heart of this defence: he scored two direct free-kicks from limited minutes last season and is also on corners. My score prediction is 2-0 to Newcastle United, which can be backed right now at 8.00.

FPL Midfielder Must-Pick

Mo Salah (£13.0m)

Mo Salah is a must-have for Liverpool’s opening trip to Fulham: they will have a significant advantage against this promoted team, represented in the 1.33 win odds, with Marco Silva complaining this week that he has just 16 players available to him.

Salah won the Golden Boot last campaign with 23 goals, while also amassing 14 fantasy assists. Liverpool are well known for their goal-scoring pedigree, particularly against weakened opposition, with their odds of scoring over 2.5 goals at 2.60. Salah was involved in nearly 40% of Liverpool’s goals in 2021/22.

Salah is on penalties for Liverpool and has a flawless Gameweek 1 record for Liverpool: he’s scored on this matchday for five consecutive seasons, racking up double digit FPL points on the road against promoted sides. My score prediction is 3-1 to Liverpool, which can be backed right now at 12.00.

FPL Forward Must-Pick

Harry Kane (£11.5m)

It’s fair to say that Antonio Conte’s arrival at Tottenham Hotspur was a game changer last season, with Spurs second to Manchester City for goals scored since his arrival. Given the signings they’ve made this summer to strengthen their squad, 1.40 against Southampton should be routine.

Harry Kane has the most attacking returns (goals and assists) of any Premier League player in 2022, with 23 goal involvements. Kane has had an impressive pre-season alongside team-mate Heung-Min Son, with five goals and one assist, with their odds of scoring over 2.5 goals at 1.53 this weekend.

With a full pre-season under his belt, Kane is ready to quash any rumours that he doesn’t score in August. My score prediction is 4-0 to Spurs, which can be backed right now at 19.00.
