The 2022-23 Premier League season has seen Arsenal fly high and one of the key players behind the Gunners’ strong run has been summer signing Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Ukrainian has been Mikel Arteta’s first-choice left-back and his ability to act as an extra midfielder when Arsenal have possession has been a key factor behind Arsenal’s fine performances.

Zinchenko’s importance to the team, however, has meant limited minutes for fan favourite Kieran Tierney. The Scottish full-back has been behind Zinchenko in the pecking order, having only started four times in 17 appearances in the league.

Former Arsenal and Manchester United man Mikael Silvestre talked to us about Tierney’s situation giving his insights. He also talked about Bukayo Saka’s role and why he deserves a massive contract.

Tierney’s not playing because Zinchenko is special – that’s what it is

In the mind of the former French international, Tierney’s minutes are limited because he’s competing with a special player in Zinchenko. In addition to that the Ukrainian has won the Premier League title and that experience is vital for Arsenal’s pursuit of their first league title since 2003-04.

“Zinchenko is quite a special player. That’s what it is.”

“You have to compete with someone else who’s won the Premier League already with City and he’s doing well.”

Silvestre advises the Scottish defender to be patient and play his heart out in training, despite it being a tough task to replace Zinchenko.

“So, you have to be patient. It doesn’t mean you just let go and wait. You have to prove in training every time that you deserve to play.”

“But yes, it is difficult to get Zinchenko out of the team. It is pretty much impossible. That’s what it is, it’s just tough because of that.”

Important to reward Saka for his effort and commitment

Talks around Bukayo Saka’s contract renewal are ongoing and it is strongly suggested that the Arsenal academy graduate will sign a long-term deal with the Gunners.

With 10 goals and nine assists in the league so far, the English winger is one of Arsenal’s key men and Silvestre believes it is important to reward him for his efforts. The Frenchman also adds that a big contract for Saka will give confidence and motivate other team members as well.

“Well it’s a good move from Arsenal to reward your best players, especially when they’re young, come from the academy, when they play for the England national team.”

“There are so many reasons why you want to tie Saka up for long. Mikel Arteta and Edu are planning for the long-term, not the short term, so it is important for the player to be rewarded for his effort, commitment.

“It keeps everybody settled and confident that this is the best place to be to win trophies.”
