After Wednesday no more teams in Serie A will have a game in hand and our Italian football expert, Daniele Fisichella, has prepared Inter Milan vs Atalanta prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.
Back in January this match was postponed due to Inter’s involvement in the SuperCoppa and it now represents a great opportunity for the Neroazzurri to all but close the title race.
Our Inter Milan vs Atalanta prediction is for Inter to win the match 2-0.
In this article:
Italy, Serie A, Wednesday, February 28th, 19:45 (UK)
Inter have achieved ten consecutive wins in 2024, smashing Antonio Conte’s record in 2021, and thanks to their 4-0 success at Lecce, they kept Juventus nine points behind.
Three more points this Wednesday would propel Simone Inzaghi’s men towards their 20th Scudetto and allow them to shift the focus on the second leg of the Champions League’s Round of 16 against Atletico Madrid.
Only in 2006/2007 did the hosts achieve more points (67 that season, just one more than in the current campaign) after 25 matches.
Despite making six changes from the formation that beat Atletico midweek, Inter dominated the game last Sunday and scored four goals for the third consecutive weekend.
Thanks to his brace, Lautaro Martinez now has 101 goals in 196 Serie A matches, and he became the ninth player in the club’s history to reach this landmark.
Once again, Inter demonstrated they can count on a stronger squad compared to last season; in fact, Davide Frattesi contributed with a goal and an assist, and Alexis Sanchez was also a central figure at the Stadio Via Del Mare.
The Neroazzurri have got Serie A’s best attack and defence (15 clean sheets, 63% of games) and have only failed to score once this season (0-0 draw against Real Sociedad) in 17 matches played in front of their crowd.
Even with key players missing, like Marcus Thuram and Hakan Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Inter will be able to threaten Atalanta, who, on the other hand, are no stranger to conceding away from home.
The Orobici suffered AC Milan’s intensity last Sunday and never got going in the match.
After falling behind, they were lucky to find the equalizer from the penalty spot with Teun Koopmeiners (eight Serie A goals this season), but, after the break, left the initiative almost entirely to AC Milan.
Gianpiero Gasperini’s men remained unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions and were clearly the happiest of the two sides after their 1-1 draw.
Atalanta have only kept three away clean sheets in Serie A, and their last three away games against top sides in Italy (Bologna, Roma and AC Milan) have only produced five goals in total.
Unlike Inzaghi, Gianpiero Gasperini did not do turnover last weekend and will inevitably have to rotate some of his players, considering Atalanta has a tough month ahead of them.
The Atalanta manager complained to the Italian FA for arranging a back-to-back trip to San Siro for his side as he believed this match could have been played earlier in the month.
This could perhaps play into the minds of Atalanta’s players, who find themselves chasing Bologna currently in fourth position.
The visitors have only collected 14 points away from home and have already lost five games this season, whereas Inter have been relentless at San Siro.
Seventeen of the Neroazzurri’s thirty domestic goals have come in the first 45 minutes, and the only criticism that can be moved to them is that they often squander scoring chances.
Inter have never trailed at home this season after the first half and have only conceded once before the break.
Atalanta’s numbers away from home are not so strong: they’ve only won three out of 12 games at half-time and currently have a negative goal difference (-2), having conceded ten times.
Inter Milan vs Atalanta Prediction odds via bet365 as at 23:00, February 25th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Marko Arnautovic and Kristjan Asllani might start the game as both Marcus Thuram and Hakan Çalhanoğlu are dealing with muscular injuries.
Pavard and Bastoni should return in defence, and Barella will also be in the starting XI. Lautaro Martinez will again lead the line for Inter.
“It is certainly a very consistent Inter. After the Champions League Final, we matured in every way,” said Lautaro on Sunday.
“But we mustn’t stop here; we need to keep raising the bar every day, in every training session, to make it difficult for the coach to choose.”
Gianpiero Gasperini will probably opt for Ademola Lookman or Gianluca Scamacca from the start. Zappacosta is ahead of Holm for a place at left wing-back, Toloi might replace Kolasinac. Scalvini is a doubt due to a shoulder injury.
Inter Milan possible starting lineup:
Sommer; Pavard, De Vrij, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Asllani, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Arnautovic, Lautaro
Atalanta possible starting lineup:
Carnesecchi; Palomino, Djimsiti, Toloi; Zappacosta, De Roon, Ederson, Ruggeri; Koopmeiners, Miranchuk; Lookman
