After a rough couple of seasons, Manchester United have looked like a rejuvenated side under Erik ten Hag’s management. The side have improved as the season has progressed with new talents like Alejandro Garnacho coming to the fore as well as Marcus Rashford becoming a talisman of sorts.
Despite the visible progress, the flaws in this Man Utd side are still evident and the lack of a goal-getting centre forward is a primary shortcoming. The Red Devils signed Wout Weghorst after Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious departure and the Dutchman, while being a solid team player, has struggled to put the ball in the net.
Ten Hag’s men are actively looking to bolster their forward line and the two names that have been linked to them the most are Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen.
Mikael Silvestre, a mainstay of Sir Alex Ferguson’s PL winning sides, gave his view on United’s hunt for a striker and also talked about the impact that Kane could have if he came to Old Trafford.
In this article:
The former French international believes that Kane, who is the third-highest goalscorer in league history, can go on to break that record if he joins Manchester United.
“Harry Kane, he knows the Premier League inside out, it will be an easy fit for him. Harry could continue to break records at Manchester United and end up as the top goalscorer in league history.”
Of course, Kane moving to Old Trafford would be reminiscent of Teddy Sheringham, Silvestre’s former teammate, jumping ship in 1997.
The Frenchman says that while it is tempting to make that comparison, they are different players but similar on a technical level.
“I can see why you put those two names together but I wouldn’t compare Sheringham and Kane. Different times, different players.”
“I understand the comparison in terms of the flair. Harry, the way he plays and the way Teddy played, was at a high technical level. They’ve made things look easy – simple and smooth. A bit like Dimitar Berbatov and Robin van Persie.”
Silvestre made his opinion known that either Kane or Osimhen would be a good option for the Red Devils. He also believes that the transfer is ultimately going to hinge on the financial aspect, rather than footballing ability.
“I believe both of them can do the job for Manchester United looking at their style of play. Both Osimhen and Harry Kane can fit. I don’t have any preferences.”
“I think they will fit into the style and demands and gel with the other players. I think, for me, it’s gonna be more about the numbers, the finances, rather than the quality.”
The four-time Premier League champion thinks that Osimhen, who’s set the Serie A alight with 21 goals this season, is ready to make that move to England, be it with Manchester United or another Premier League side.
“Osimhen, I’ve seen him in France and now in Italy with Napoli. I think he’s ready for that move to England.”
“Could be Manchester United but I’m sure there will be other takers.”
