Our football expert, Scott Thorton, brings you their La Liga acca tips as we gear up for the return of the Spanish top flight.

Barcelona won the league at a canter last season, but Xavi will be expecting a more significant challenge from Real Madrid, who have been busy in the summer transfer window. The race for the Champions League places is also set to be highly competitive, with the likes of Sevilla expected to improve.

Sevilla vs Valencia: Sevilla to Make a Winning Start

Spain, La Liga, Friday, August 11th, 20:30 (UK)

Sevilla won the Europa League last season and finished midtable, with Jose Luis Mendilibar lifting them away from the threat of relegation. They have strengthened their squad this summer and look set more a better campaign this time around, despite media speculation about outstanding debt.

The side from Andalusia were by no means swashbuckling at home last season, but they did manage to win seven of their last 12 league matches at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan. They scored 0.5 more goals per game than they conceded over that period.

Valencia ended last season just two points above the relegation zone. Things improved slightly after Ruben Baraja was appointed in February, but it was still far too close for comfort.

Los Che’s away form last season left a lot to be desired. They won just two of their nine league matches on the road under Baraja. During this run, they scored an average of just 0.78 goals per game.

  • Selection: Sevilla To Win

Real Sociedad vs Girona: Sociedad’s Home form to rumble on into the new season

Spain, La Liga, Friday, August 12th, 16:00 (UK)

Real Sociedad finished last season in fine form and secured their return to the Champions League. They have beaten Real Betis and Bayer Leverkusen in recent weeks and look raring to go ahead of the start of La Liga. They have also brought in Andre Silva hoping he can replace Alexander Sorloth’s goals.

Erreala were a real force at home in San Sebastian last season. They lost just three of their 19 league matches on home turf, conceding an average of 0.87 goals per game. They have also scored two goals in six of their last seven home matches, winning six.

Girona are coming into this season on the back of a successful campaign of their own. They finished 10th in their first season back in the top flight since promotion from the Segunda Division. They have failed to beat Sociedad in their last five attempts.

Michel’s side struggled on the road last season. They won just three of their away matches in La Liga. Their successful campaign largely depended on the points they picked up at home.

  • Selection: Sociedad To Win & To Score Over 1 Goal
  • Best Odds: 1.90
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 7/10

Las Palmas vs Mallorca: Lacklustre defences should see chances at both ends

Spain, La Liga, Friday, August 12th, 18:30 (UK)

Las Palmas are back in La Liga, having earned promotion from the second tier last season. They last competed with Spain’s elite in 2018, where they were relegated after picking up just 22 points. If they want to have any hopes of surviving, they will need to pick up plenty of points in front of their fans.

They averaged 1.2 goals per home game in the league last season, so they aren’t exactly primed to be an attacking force considering they are stepping up a division.

La Palmas are taking on a Mallorca side that had a miserable campaign last time and was lucky to avoid relegation. On the final day, a 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano kept Javier Aguirre in his job. They will now be hoping for improvements this season.

Mallorca conceded 1.42 goals per away game last season, conceding in one of their last 12 away matches in all competitions. However, I am backing them to score against newly-promoted opposition. Both teams have scored in the previous three meetings between these sides at this ground.

  • Selection: Both Teams To Score
  • Best Odds: 2.10
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 7/10
