The hosts have a mountain to climb if they want to reach the Coppa Italia final and our Italian football expert, Daniele Fisichella, has prepared Lazio vs Juventus prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.
Prediction: Lazio 1-0 Juventus
A month ago, former Juventus player Igor Tudor debuted on the Lazio bench with a convincing victory over the Bianconeri in Serie A.
But a 2-0 win for Juve, only three days after in Turin, has put Massimiliano Allegri’s men in the driving seat to return to the Stadio Olimpico on 15 May.
Italy, Coppa Italia, semi-final, 2nd leg, Tuesday, April 23rd, 20:00 (UK)
On the back of another disappointing performance, the 2-2 draw at Cagliari, this match represents Juve’s last chance to save a turbulent season.
The visitors won their last trophy three years ago and, in a campaign with no European football, playing the Coppa Italia final and finishing in the top four in Serie A represent the minimum target for Italy’s most titled club.
The Bianconeri are also winless in six away games (three draws and three defeats) and, in 2024, have beaten only Salernitana and Lecce on the road.
Last Friday, Juventus suffered Cagliari’s rhythm in the first half and looked with no clear ideas on how to score against a side, the Sardinians, who have only kept four clean sheets this season.
Juve have failed to score in the first 45 minutes for the 20th time this season and their reaction after the break was not enough to get a win.
The visitors have only won five of their last thirteen matches in all competitions and kept only four clean sheets.
Since losing the Scudetto decider against Inter back in February, their drop in form and concentration has been evident.
Allegri’s men were outplayed by Lazio for large spells of the double-header (first in the league and then in the Coppa) three weeks ago, and will probably have to put up one of their best defensive displays in order to qualify for the final.
The hosts will be encouraged by their performance last Friday in Genova where, despite not creating many chances, they showed good resilience and capitalized on one of the few mistakes made by Alberto Gilardino’s side.
Lazio is still trying to adapt to Igor Tudor’s football, which demands high intensity and pressing almost all over the pitch.
The first signs the team is beginning to abandon Maurizio Sarri’s style of playing are starting to emerge, although the Biancocelesti are still looking to find consistency.
The victory against Genoa had all the connotations of smash and grab job, and although the deficit to overcome is huge (Juventus has lost by two goals or more only four times since 2021/2022), this season’s epic Champions League performances at home against Feyenoord, Celtic and Bayern Munich give hopes to the Laziali.
In Tudor’s 3-4-2-1 system Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson are playing close to the opposition’s goal and, in the absence of top goalscorer Ciro Immobile, represent the main threats carried by Lazio.
The Spaniard and the Brazilian often interchange positions, and when one comes short to receive the ball, the other runs behind the backline.
Anderson has scored five times and given six assists this season and has had at least two shots (three on target in total) in all the last five games.
Lazio are in transition, and the feeling is that a sizeable player turnover will happen this summer.
However, since the change on the bench, their results have improved: the hosts have won four of the last five in Serie A, as many as they did in the previous 10 matches.
Last year’s league’s runners-up haven’t been strengthened enough in the summer and, as happened last season, they have struggled to cope with playing European football.
In 2022/2023 right after being knocked out of the Conference League Lazio won 10 of the remaining 12 league games, one of them against Juve which they now have beaten in the last two encounters played in Italy’s capital.
Equally, the Biancocelesti have the seventh worst domestic attack in Serie A (only 19 goals scored, less than Sassuolo and Cagliari) as 31% (five out of 16) of their games at the ‘Stadio Olimpico’ have produced more than three goals.
Both Teams To Score – No would have been a winning bet in 18 out of 33 Juve’s games this season as the Bianconeri have kept seven away clean sheets in the league, second only to leaders Inter (9).
Lazio vs Juventus Prediction odds via bet365 as at 09:00, April 22nd, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Lazio will be without Provedel, Zaccagni and Guendouzi due to injury. Immobile might be fit enough to start on the bench.
Castellanos will be the center-forward, with Kamada confirmed in midfield. Hysaj should replace Lazzari who subbed off due to injury against Genoa.
Massimiliano Allegri will be without Kean and Gatt (suspended). Rugani will complete the defensive trio with Bremer and Danilo, while McKennie should be back in midfield from the first minute.
Chiesa and Vlahovic will make up the attacking duo, but Yildiz is in contention with the Italian international to start the semi-final. Perin will be in goal.
Lazio possible starting lineup:
Mandas; Patric, Romagnoli, Gila; Hysaj, Kamada, Vecino, Marusic; Felipe Anderson, Luis Alberto; Castellanos.
Juventus possible starting lineup:
Perin; Rugani, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Chiesa, Vlahovic.
