Ligue 1 Best Bets: 14th-16th April

RC Lens’ visit to Paris steals the majority of the spotlight in France this weekend, though there’s plenty of football to get stuck into from a betting perspective. Four matches and selections are detailed below:

Toulouse vs Lyon Preview

Friday, April 14th, 20:00 (UK)

I’m not too confident in which way this game will go in terms of result, but Toulouse vs Lyon for Friday night football in France screams goals to me. The 3.0 Asian goal line suggests the bookmakers hold a similar view.

Here we have two sides familiar with finding the net whilst not presenting as the most robust of teams at the other end of the pitch. It’s the perfect recipe for goals, as we’ve seen in Toulouse’s last three outings (1-2, 1-2, & 3-1).

As for Lyon, well, their record of 9/15 games ticking off BTTS & O2.5 goals (60%) whilst playing away from home this season in Ligue1 is pipped only by Troyes.

Overall in France’s top-flight, both side’s BTTS records read well: 60% of Toulouse matches (18/30) and 63% for Lyon (19/30) paid out for BTTS punters.

Toulouse vs Lyon Best Bet

Only the current top four and Monaco have scored more goals at home than Toulouse (25) this season. That’s impressive and signals confidence when stepping foot on familiar soil. Toulouse have very little to play for; mid-table, safe from harm and free of any pressure of the European spots.

There’s a Coupe de France final ringing loudly in the mind of everyone involved with Toulouse. However, the task of chipping in on the goals front should be a manageable task here.

  • Selection: BTTS & O2.5 Goals
  • Best Odds: 1.83 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 5/10

PSG vs RC Lens Preview

Saturday, April 15th, 20:00 (UK)

The most significant game of the weekend? There’s no contest there. RC Lens will pitch up in Paris Saint Germain’s backyard in the capital, hopeful of a late-night claiming of three points.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the last month, PSG have been faltering. A 0-2 win in Nice may have righted some wrongs but compounded with the feeble exit from the Champions League, losses to both Lyon and Rennes on home soil soured the taste of all involved with the Qatari-backed super club.

That’s unheard of in these parts. Christophe Galtier’s head looks readied on the chopping block amidst poor form and scandal via leaked emails from his time at OGC Nice. Although the cameras may be pointed at Galtier in the dugout before kick-off, there’s only one man on which the proposed selection focuses.

PSG vs RC Lens Best Bet

Kylian Mbappe usually turns up when it matters most – the World Cup final is testament to that, despite his hat-trick not being enough to send Jules Rimet home to France.

In Ligue1, Mbappe’s 4.46 shots per90 figure leads the division, as does his 2.32 shots on target per90 average sum. If he can replicate something similar here, in what is his side’s biggest game of the Ligue 1 season, that price just shy of evens will make Saturday night’s viewing a profitable one.

  • Selection: Kylian Mbappe 4+ Shots & 1 On Target
  • Best Odds: 1.95 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 5/10

Stade Brestois vs OGC Nice Preview

Sunday, April 16th, 14:00 (UK)

It was a hard-fought draw in Switzerland. A first-half Terem Moffi brace overturned an early Basel penalty to put Les Aiglons in front at the half-time whistle. Nevertheless, Basel would hit back, underlining the quality left in the latter stages of European competition and the stretch of form emanating from the Didier Digard-led camp.

On the face of things, four draws and a loss to PSG isn’t the worst run in the world, though any side with European qualification on their mind should be sweeping past a hopeless Angers outfit, Lorient, and Auxerre at home.

With tired legs from Thursday night and the present inability to put teams to the sword, it makes the Stade Brestois match-up on Sunday a tough proposition. For Sunday’s home side, a win over Strasbourg set them up for a spirited 90 minutes against PSG before finding an equaliser versus Troyes. But, more impressively, was the 3-1 win against a handy, goal-laden Toulouse eleven.

Stade Brestois vs OGC Nice Best Bet

Follow that up with a draw on the road in Reims, and it smacks of a Brest outfit starting to piece together both performances and results.

So, to be able to get the hosts on a plus handicap against a jaded, underperforming OGC Nice? It seems worth taking. Especially if you’re of the thinking that OGC Nice has all their eggs in the Europa Conference League basket as means for qualifying for European competition next year.

  • Selection: Brest +0.25 Asian Handicap
  • Best Odds: 1.87 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7.5/10

Marseille vs Troyes Preview

Sunday, April 16th, 19:45 (UK)

On paper, Marseille have a comfortable weekend ahead as strugglers Troyes make their way to the port city of Marseille. So often washed up on the city’s shores, alongside the local fisherman’s morning catch, is a conversation of Didier Deschamps lifting the European Cup aloft in sky blue and white with the captain’s armband fit snugly on his left arm.

This current crop isn’t quite threatening to overhaul a reminiscent Marseille but sat in third, just eight points shy of PSG in 1st and behind RC Lens in 2nd is good going. However, if Igor Tudor’s men are to upset the apple cart and make life difficult for the two sides above, Troyes on home soil must be a routine ninety minutes.

The soon-to-be Ligue2 club haven’t given home support, nor new manager Patrick Kisnorbo, anything to be gleeful about for what seems like an eternity. Their record reads as no wins in 14 and just two in 24.

Marseille vs Troyes Best Bet

Having overseen 16 matches as Troyes’ new boss, Kisnorbo’s solitary win came against Strasbourg back at the start of January. It has been a dreadful run, with the Australian coach not yet picking up the language, alongside picking up very few points. In truth, it’s a miracle he still has a job over in France, considering the W1/D4/L11 form.

Football isn’t played on paper, but if it was, a Marseille heavy bet builder on William Hill favours form, feeling in either camp and realistic outcomes for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

  • Selection: Marseille Win, Marseille First to Score, & U4.5 Match Goals
  • Best Odds: 1.78 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 10/10

Odds via bet365 and William Hill as at 09:00 April 14th 2023. Odds may now differ.
