Paris Saint Germain served up a poor representation of French football during their Champions League tie during the week – something which OGC Nice went some way to rectifying in Moldova on Thursday night.
But now, it’s back to their bread and butter, and with that, we’ve got a selection of Ligue 1 best bets for this weekend and beyond.
In this article:
France, Ligue 1, Sunday, March 11th, 20:00 (UK)
Look, PSG were abject during their Champions League tie during the week. They didn’t do anywhere near enough to threaten Bayern Munich in possession, and they showed very little fight and determination to claw their way back into the tie.
If you were on PSG bookings in any way, shape or form as I was, you’ll be acutely aware of just how lethargic PSG’s approach was. Gone are the days, seemingly, of PSG players sticking a foot in, keen to get down and dirty for the Champions League cause – the one burning desire of the club’s hierarchy.
So, you may think it’s a little odd to want to place some hard-earned money on the Parisians here. Nevertheless, European football is gone, with a Ligue 1 silverware return simply a must. Christophe Galtier may lose his job eventually with what we saw midweek, but he’ll definitely lose a spot on the sidelines if their go-to domestic trophy falls from reach.
I’m expecting a response here away at Brest alongside a Kylian Mbappé performance we’re all used to. In Ligue, PSG’s main man boasts a 4.56 shots per90 average with 2.43 finding the target. Both of those figures stand as the tallest in France’s top tier.

Angers have conceded two or more goals in 10/13 (77%) Ligue1 matches at home this season. That stands as the highest percentage in the division – an unwanted record lending itself to a swift return to Ligue2. Taking both Home and Away fixtures into account, Angers have shipped 2+ goals in 19/26 matches.
On the other hand, Toulouse comes into the weekend having bagged two or more goals in their last 7/10 outings in all competitions.
I’d rarely back a side heading into a fixture on the back of three successive losses in the league, but considering Toulouse faced off against two decent outfits in Marseille (2-3) and Reims (3-0), followed up by a poorer showing (1-0) to Clermont – it’s not the worst run. This is, however, the perfect opportunity to bounce back to form against an Angers side struggling each time they step across the white line.
The Montpellier 5-0 loss didn’t flatter the hosts, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a similar match-up is played out in front of our eyes here. In addition, Angers’ head coach, Abdel Bouhazama, left the club this week after inappropriate comments in the dressing room ahead of the Montpellier game emerged. In short, the club finds itself in dire straits.
Sunday, March 12th, 14:00 (UK)
The standout 5-0 victory over Angers last weekend will have delighted new coach Michel Der Zakarian. Montpellier on the nose was trading at 1.93 for their Angers win, which we helped ourselves to in the most recent profitable Early Bird article.
Now, Montpellier lines up against AC Ajaccio, another side languishing nearer the bottom of the table. I’m not expecting a scoreline like we saw versus a hopeless Angers, but there’s every chance that Zakarian’s bunch, with the wind in their sails after a thumping victory, can get a result here.
The only result that will ensure a loss with the Montpellier 0.0 Asian Handicap is an AC Ajaccio win. The home side on Sunday have lost 8/10 of their previous matches, winning just six all campaign.
With form and a feel-good factor in the Montpellier camp, it seems like a wise approach to backing La Paillade.
