Tom Winch is here with a Liverpool vs Atalanta prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview, as the Italians head to England in the Quarter Finals of the Europa League.
The home side are almighty favourites and head into this game after an underwhelming result at Old Trafford in the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp’s men are expected to win this competition. Liverpool will fancy themselves at Anfield, but you can’t write the Italians off just yet.
Europa League, Thursday, April 11th, 20:00 (UK)
Anfield is a fortress. Jurgen Klopp’s side have recorded 42 points from a possible 48 in the Premier League this term. Liverpool have won each of their four encounters in this competition. The English giants have won 22 matches out of 25 in all competitions.
Atalanta is a strong outfit. I don’t think we can rule them out of this tie entirely. Gasperini’s men are 4.00 to reach the next round. They’ll pose a threat, but I struggle to see how they maintain this Liverpool team. Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City are the only three sides that have prevented the Reds from scoring multiple times in 23/24.
Liverpool has been leading at HT in 13 separate matches this campaign. This clash is of significant importance. I expect the hosts to start fast and put the Italian club on the back foot.
The side from Bergamo have managed just 19 points on the road in Serie A this season. They’ve earned 50 in total. Inter Milan hosted Atalanta a few weeks ago. The first half ended 2-0. Inzaghi’s side are the best in Italy by some distance. I believe that Liverpool can edge the first 45 minutes on Merseyside.
Luis Diaz is playing some brilliant football. The Colombian international has been a regular starter under Jurgen Klopp for a lengthy period. He’s a player who never stops running. Luis is always looking to create a goalscoring opportunity. The man is a threat; I expect him to start on Thursday night.
It is no surprise to see Mo Salah (1.83) and Darwin Nunez (2.05) priced shorter in the AGS market. Diaz (2.50) is a price that appeals, especially in the form he’s shown.
Over 2.5 Goals is as short as 1.40 in places. Liverpool are 2.00 to score three times under the lights. Klopp’s men have bagged 6, 5, 4 and 2 goals in their four Europa League matches at home this term.
The Reds will be keen to take an emphatic lead heading to Italy. This tie could run away from the visitors if they aren’t careful and let the occasion get to them.
Backing Luis Diaz looks like a strong selection. He’s averaging 0.78 goals per 90 in the Europa League. His pace and trickery will trouble Atalanta’s uninspiring defence.
We all know how strong Liverpool are at scoring goals. They’re one of the best in the world at doing so. The talent they possess is frightening. Diaz, Salah, Nunez, and Gakpo will all feature in this clash. Only Manchester United have left Anfield with a clean sheet in the 23/24 season. That was incredibly fortunate.
Liverpool have conceded in 18 of their 25 home matches this term. It’s now a single shutout in their previous 13 outings at this venue. They’re vulnerable on the counterattack. Sheffield United, Luton, Burnley and Norwich have found the back of the net in that recent run.
Atalanta have found the back of the net in 26 of their 30 Serie A matches this season. That’s an impressive record. They’ve also bagged in all their eight games in the Europa League. That includes four clashes with Sporting Lisbon.
Teun Koopmeiners has been in impressive form as of late. Ademola Lookman and Gianluca Scamacca have goals in them. Atalanta has scored 1.9 goals on average in this competition. I’m confident that they can score at Anfield.
Liverpool vs Atalanta Prediction odds via bet365 as at 19:00, April 7th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Liverpool’s injury list is lengthy. Alisson, Jota, Matip, Bajcetic, Thiago and TAA have all been absent.
Liverpool’s Brazilian shot-stopper is likely to feature in the next few weeks. Jota, Trent and Bajcetic are expected to return to action later this month.
Atalanta is in a strong position when it comes to injuries. Impressive defender Giorgio Scalvini suffered a hamstring injury in their victory at Napoli.
Koopmeiners is the man in form. They’re a strong outfit that packs a punch. Defensively, they can be got at.
Liverpool possible starting lineup:
Kelleher; Bradley, Quansah, VVD, Robertson, Jones, Endo, Mac Allister, Salah, Nunez; Diaz
Atalanta possible starting lineup:
Carnesecchi; Toloi, Hien, Kolasinac, Hateboer, Ederson, de Roon, Zappacosta, Koopmeiners, Lookman; Scamacca
