The cynosure of Wednesday’s Premier League action is a dress rehearsal of the EFL Cup final, and we have you covered with a Liverpool vs Chelsea prediction, tips and best bets preview.

James Cantrill has cast an eye over the clash at Anfield suggesting three punts siding with a lack of goals, a 12.00 first goal scorer and tackles.

Recent history suggests this one may be one for the purists with two goals scored across the last seven and a half hours of football.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Tip 1: Go Against The Grain

England, Premier League, Wednesday, January 31st, 20:15 (UK)

Despite featuring two of the ‘big six’, this match-up has not exactly lived up to its billing in recent years.

The 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on matchday one of the Premier League season ended a run of four straight 0-0 draws between the clubs.

Although head-to-head records are a flimsy thing to base a bet on, I will be siding with a lack of goals here. Under 3.0, 3.5 is the bet at 1.890.

I am aware the Blues recently put six past Middlesbrough in their League Cup semi-final second leg, but anyone who watched that game on the Championship side were masters of their own downfall. Mauricio Pochettino’s side has only scored one goal in the three games on either side of that Boro route.

Chelsea have not been free-scoring on the road this term. Domestically, they have only netted two or more in three of their ten games. Two of those games were against new boys Luton and Burnley, and the other came in North London when Tottenham finished the game with nine men.

Liverpool haven’t had any issues finding the net in Mohammed Salah’s absence, scoring 18 times in their six games this month. Unders has clicked in all bar one of their games against fellow big six members in the top flight though.

It would take four goals for this bet to lose, so it won’t make for nice viewing, but I think a lack of goals is where the value is at Anfield.

  • Liverpool vs Chelsea Tip 1: Under 3.0, 3.5 Goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.900
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 10/10

Liverpool vs Chelsea Tip 2: Goal Palmer

Cole Palmer may be the signing of the season.

When he made the switch from Manchester City in September, it would have been bold to suggest his antics in London would put him in the frame for Gareth Southgate’s Euro squad but 11 goals and six assists later, and that is where we are.

In the top flight, the attacker is posting a G+A per 90 average of 0.95, meaning he is within a whisker of having a hand in a goal per every game he completes.

In his last six appearances, he has netted two braces, scoring five in total and set up another two.

With Palmer also on penalty duty, his price of 4.50 to find the net in Merseyside has to be a bet. In a game where I expect goals may be of a premium, I am going to be a little bolder here and side with him to score first at 12.00.

Palmer has opened the scoring in three of his side’s last five league games.

  • Liverpool vs Chelsea Tip 2: Cole Palmer First Goalscorer (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 12.00
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 5/10

Liverpool vs Chelsea Tip 3: Energy & Output

What chance did Moises Caicedo have? Joining Chelsea for an eye-watering free, expectations were always going to be unfeasibly high, but the midfielder is growing into his role at Stamford Bridge.

Energy and defensive output are the Ecuadorians’ game. He has started all bar one of Chelsea’s last 13 games and is crucial out of possession.

In the seven league games over that period, Caicedo has completed 23 tackles. At least one in every game, four on four occasions, five on three and six at Old Trafford.

I expect him to play a pivotal role against the club he snubbed in the summer and wouldn’t be surprised to see him notch up the tackles in a hectic midfield.

Across the two legs with Fulham, the Cottagers CDM pairing completed 21 tackles in total. At the Emirates, Declan Rice made six, Jorginho four and Martin Odegaard three.

  • Liverpool vs Chelsea Tip 3: Moises Caicedo 3+ Tackles (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.91
  • Bookmaker: Sky Bet
  • Stake: 10/10

Liverpool vs Chelsea Team News Preview: No Mo Salah

Mohammed Salah returned to Merseyside to receive treatment for an injury, and with Egypt out of the African Cup of Nations, he will not be returning to the Ivory Coast. This fixture may come too soon for the frontman, though.

Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo started up front for the Reds at the weekend, and the trio may continue here.

Trent Alexander-Arnold made a cameo in the FA Cup win over Norwich and should return to the XI on Wednesday, potentially at the expense of Conor Bradley.

Chelsea appeared to have made it through the stalemate with Aston Villa on Friday unscathed. Pochettino will shuffle his deck here though.

Ben Chilwell should return at left-back alongside Levi Colwill at the heart of the defence.
