In this article:
England, Premier League, Monday, February 13th, 20:00 (UK)
Liverpool welcome Everton to Anfield on Monday night and it promises to be an entertaining affair. It’s the first Merseyside Derby for Sean Dyche at Everton. Dyche is the eighth permanent manager the Toffees have had since Jurgen Klopp took over on the other side of the city.
Things got off to a perfect start for the former-Burnley boss. Dyche’s first game in charge saw Everton beat Arsenal 1-0. The shock result is likely to make Evertonians cautiously optimistic ahead of this clash.
The Toffees are gearing up for a fight against relegation yet again but Dyche is no stranger to a fight at the bottom of the table. Everton were on a run of 10 games without a win prior to last week. They managed to beat Liverpool at Anfield in 2021 but that is their only win over their local rivals in the last 20 Merseyside derbies. Over that period, Everton are averaging just 0.6 goals per game. However, Liverpool have rarely looked frailer defensively.
Liverpool have struggled this season. They are facing a battle to finish in the top four and they currently sit 10th in the Premier League. Klopp’s side have failed to win any of their last three matches in all competitions. They were comprehensively beaten by Wolves in their last match and will be looking to bounce back here. Many of their supporters are unhappy with the way the club is run and have voiced their concern with the lack of quality in midfield.
These sides drew 0-0 at Goodison Park earlier this season and it should be another close encounter on Monday. Both teams have looked shaky defensively. It remains to be seen whether Sean Dyche has had enough time to sure things up at the back.
There were 37 shots in the fixtures earlier this season; with Everton having 14 of those attempts. This is well above the 9.8 shots per game they have averaged in their last 10 matches with Liverpool. Everton’s last match against Arsenal saw 27 shots and they will be keen to get at their rivals here.
Liverpool were rocked by two early goals in their last match against Wolves. They still went on to concede 12 shots in the match, which is surprising considering Lopetegui’s men had a comfortable lead early on. There were 34 shots in that match and there should be plenty of opportunities for both sides on Monday night. Both of Liverpool’s home league matches since the World Cup have seen 26 shots or more.
Tackles also look like a good bet here. The last 10 meetings between these sides are averting 34.1 tackles per game. Liverpool’s matches at Anfield this season are averaging 35.1 tackles per game.
Liverpool’s last home match against Chelsea saw 39 tackles. Everton’s first game under Dyche saw 32 tackles. There has been 33 tackles or more in Everton’s last five trips to this ground. There is a lot at stake for both sides in this one and we could see a frantic affair with both sets of players keen to get stuck in.
