New Year’s Day finishes with a trip to Anfield in the Premier League, with Nathan Joyes on hand with his Liverpool vs Newcastle predictions.
Having won just one in their last seven matches, Eddie Howe’s injury-struck side have it all to do against a Liverpool outfit unbeaten in their last 15 games on home soil.
In this article:
It was another defeat for Newcastle on Boxing Day as a hat-trick from their former striker Chris Wood saw Howe’s side fall further down the table. That result made it consecutive defeats against newly-promoted Luton and a struggling Nottingham Forest side – cause for concern, to say the least.
With their injury list continuing to rack up, Newcastle haven’t been able to cope, and a trip to Anfield is the last venue Howe will want to travel to during the festive period.
Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes, Nick Pope, Javier Manquillo and Jamal Lascelles are still unable to be part of the matchday squad.
On the other hand, Liverpool have continued to show why they are genuine title contenders this season. Despite their disappointing draw at home to Man United, they are enjoying a 15-match unbeaten streak at Anfield – and their Boxing Day victory over Burnley put them on top of the tree.
Due to Newcastle’s poor form and Liverpool’s excellent performances in recent weeks, Jurgen Klopp’s team are rightly priced at 1.50. However, adding in the insurance of the Asian Handicap at -1 brings the bet to a more palatable 1.70.
A makeshift Newcastle side lacking confidence will crumble if conceding early, and having conceded three to Everton and four to Spurs on the road, their problems aren’t going away any time soon.
Perhaps a seemingly obvious play, but Mohamed Salah has already fired home 12 league goals this campaign, as well as contributing seven assists.
The Egyptian scored an exquisite goal against title contenders Arsenal, as well as one against West Ham in the League Cup quarter-finals. The 31-year-old is looking to make it three on the spin at home, and against Newcastle’s defence, which has conceded 11 in their last five, he should relish this opportunity.
With the worst form in the league over the last five matches, a defence consisting of Sven Botman, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn won’t have the pace to cope with Salah. With Liverpool expected to win, their top goalscorer will be at the heart of the action as Howe’s side are stretched throughout the 90 minutes.
It’s an obvious selection, but it’s often not worth complicating these bets, and Salah is your man to get on the scoresheet.
As I’ve already mentioned, Liverpool and Newcastle couldn’t be heading in different directions if they tried. With one looking to secure another Premier League title, the other is trying to steady the ship – with Howe looking to prove he’s the right man for the job.
The manner in which Newcastle has struggled on the road – in particular against Premier League new boy Luton- will concern Geordie supporters. They didn’t look a threat in the final third, and although they got on the scoresheet against Nottingham Forest, it was a rather contentious penalty.
Despite Liverpool’s recent 1-1 draws at Anfield against Arsenal and Man United, this has made the price rather generous – and it’s time to strike.
Comfortable home wins against Forest and Brentford saw them leading at half-time, and with Newcastle in worse form than either of those mentioned sides, it would be a disappointment if Liverpool didn’t pull Howe’s side apart in the opening 45.
Klopp would have learned plenty from a poor first half against Man United, and with a much higher intensity, Newcastle, in their current state, won’t be able to handle it. If Liverpool leads from half-time thanks to Salah, all three bets will be in a good place, as will the three points for the hosts.
By now, it is no secret how thin Newcastle are, as their squad is tested during the busy Christmas period. However, Liverpool have a few key players sidelined as they head into 2024.
World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister, Andy Robertson, Joel Matip, and Konstantinos Tskimikas are all set to miss the clash.
