With Newcastle coming up short at Wembley last weekend, it’ll be interesting to see how they bounce back at the Ethiad, arguably the trickiest away day of the season. I fully expect Manchester City to pile plenty of pressure onto this Newcastle side. They need to win but they’ll be made to work for it. Backing the home side to rack up some corners seems to be a decent angle given the stats and how this game may play out.
At the Etihad, Manchester City have taken 94 corners across 12 league matches. They have been awarded six or more in 10 games from 12 with exactly five coming in the two exceptions.
Although Eddie Howe’s side have conceded the fewest goals, it’ll be difficult to see them keep City out considering their record at home. Pep’s side have scored in every game in Manchester this campaign, with an impressive 41 in total. Just Liverpool and Spurs have registered clean sheets against the current champions, which just shows how big a task Newcastle have on their hands.
Alexander Isak has had an unfortunate debut season for Newcastle, he was ruled out with injury for a lengthy amount of time but his shot record has been rather strong in the time he’s spent on the pitch. The Swede has started five times in the top flight this campaign, recording a shot in all.
The chances may be few and far between for the visitors but they will pose a threat with the pace and power on the counter. I’m hoping Isak gets the nod from Eddie Howe and starts here, and if he does, I expect that he’ll unleash a shot.
