Marseille have sauntered through the opening passage of games in France. The 1-1 draw with Brest the only minor blip from what has been a commanding foray into a season still in its infancy. Lille? Well, it hasn’t been a saunter, that’s for sure.

Unfortunately, the Champions League showing in London on Wednesday didn’t go as planned. Yet, without key personnel in Dimitri Payet, who remained on the bench with slight injury concerns, and Alexis Sanchez through suspension, it was always going to be an uphill battle. However, it wasn’t missing components that were the issue. Chancel Mbema’s red card derailed a Marseille performance that smothered their English counterparts for periods. The group will take confidence from that as Lille arrives to provide the next stern test.
Lille’s season can be described as more of a stutter than a saunter. A 1-7 battering at the hands of PSG at home proposes just how far away Les Dogues are from France’s best right now. In Marseille, Lille have their work cut out. Nonetheless, they’ve scored in all six matches so far and will have a game plan set out to do the same.
Jonathon David’s double in Montpellier makes it four for the season for him, whilst Rémy Cabella’s four assists in a trio of games suggest his free transfer could make a game-changing difference to Paulo Fonseca’s Lille squad.
The two sides’ card averages from the season’s opening six games suggest Benoit Millot may be in for a busy evening in Marseille. The man in the middle comes into the new season equipped with 3.94 yellow cards per90 average from 2021/22. Granted, it’s not the best in the world, but it should be enough to compliment what could be a feisty affair on Saturday evening.
The two Ligue 1 meetings last season both encouraged red cards – one for Marseille on their travels to Lille and likewise when Lille made the trip away from home. In those matches, the official on duty brandished five yellows and one red in Marseille after four yellows and one red card reared its head in the October fixture earlier in the season.
In 89% of Millot’s 18 appearances in the league last term, he brandished a card to both sides. From that percentage, 61% of sides in the home dressing room received over 1.5 cards, whilst, as expected, the away teams saw two or more cards flashed in their direction a tad more frequently – 72%.
The above makes a bookings angle appealing and one that will make up the bulk of the bet builder pick. Next, it’s another Over 1.5 selection. However, this time, it’s goals-focused.
Both Marseille and Lille enter fixture number seven, having ushered in over 1.5 goals in each match. As you’d expect, each team appears in the top ten for xG in Ligue 1 – Lille’s 9.5xG overshadowing Marseille’s 9.2xG ever so slightly. As well, as reds in last season’s head-to-heads, goals were also present – two goals apiece, to be exact. The over 1.5 goals trend has lasted 9/9 meetings. Hopefully that stretches one game further on Saturday evening.
