Two old rivals in Monaco vs Marseille meet at the Stade Louis II for this Saturday night showdown at 20:00. Marseille lost for the first time in Ligue 1 last week when they were heavily beaten 0-4 by PSG.
Currently managerless, OM needs to bounce back quickly and get their fans back on side. Monaco also suffered their first defeat of the season last week when Folarin Balogun incredibly missed two penalties in one game! They have been shunted off the top of the table, but the Principality side has, for the most part, enjoyed a solid start to the campaign.
At the controls for this game? Steve Wyss.

Monaco has only lost one match this season, and it came last week in the south coast derby at home to Nice. Incredibly, they missed two penalties in that fixture, with Folarin Balogun misfiring from the spot on each occasion. Monaco were then unfortunate to suffer a late defeat right at the death (0-1). At the very least, they should have drawn the game, and most would say they should have won. Monaco’s underlying numbers are excellent, with the highest xG of any team in Ligue 1 (14.26) and one of the best three xGA defences.
I think with a bet builder, it’s best to have slightly more caution and go with the X2 double chance. Monaco is a very generous price to win outright, though, and for those who are brave, I wouldn’t discourage adding the more significant price instead. Marseille are managerless at the time of writing and certainly in crisis. Their performance and result vs PSG last weekend was terrible (0-4), and prior to that, their defence looked all at sea against Ajax in the wild 3-3 outing. Monaco should be good enough for at least a point.
Marseille’s performance in Paris last week was so toothless that it brought about much criticism from pundits and fans alike. They went down with a whimper, and it was a total procession for PSG. It doesn’t help matters that they are currently managerless, but there is no way the fans would accept five men at the back in a fixture like this. Marseille will surely have to have a go and swing much harder, perhaps in a similar fashion to the Ajax game. They should be good enough for a goal, and Monaco are not a guarantee to keep a clean sheet.
This has the makings of a high-scoring game. It’s not always the case, but this head-to-head meeting does have a history of some wild and crazy games. That is, of course, to be expected between two south coast rivals. The atmosphere is sure to be intense, and this has the feel of an end-to-end type of contest in which both teams try to outscore each other.
There is enough firepower in each attack force to warrant betting on the Over 3.5 Goal Line in a bet builder to add extra value. It’s the type of game where if it goes over, it’s probably a large over containing four or more goals. Marseille have looked like a defensive disaster since Marcelino left, but they proved in Amsterdam they can cook some goals up for themselves. Monaco are the highest-scoring team in Ligue 1 and possess the most fruitful xG total. The stats and recent performances point towards lots of goals.
