Monday Euros Qualifying Best Bets

For the international players of the top European leagues the end of a gruelling season is finally in sight. Monday sees 12 match day 4 qualifiers from the European Championship qualification campaign.

We put three of those games under the microscope here and serve up a best bet in each.

Republic of Ireland vs Gibraltar Preview

Euro Qualifiers, Monday, June 19th, 19:45 (UK)

The Republic went to Turkey for warm weather training ahead of their clash with Greece in Athens on Friday. With Stephen Kenny concerned about the match fitness of his key players due to their limited game time domestically.

He will therefore be relieved on two counts ahead of this fixture. Firstly to have gotten a game in his squads legs and also for a return to home soil.

The Boys in Green drew plaudits from their opening home fixture of the group. Only falling to a 1-0 loss to the tournament favourites France courtesy of Benjamin Pavard’s long range piledriver. It goes without saying this is a must win match for the home side.

Gibraltar’s first away fixture in the group ended the same way as their opening match on home soil. In a 3-0 defeat.

Given their road game was against a Netherlands side ranked 6th in the world by FIFA, Julio César Ribas could be proud his side kept the scoreline respectable. After all it was a 40th successive defeat in qualifying fixtures and the 177th goal they had conceded while amassing just 12 of their own.

Republic of Ireland vs Gibraltar Best Bet

Stephen Kenny will ensure his side are not the first team to suffer defeat at the hands of Gibraltar in a qualifying campaign. Los Llanis are ranked 201st in world football by FIFA with only San Marino lower in the UEFA coefficient.

It is impossible to see anything other than a home win reflected by odds as low as 1.01. However the Republic have had issues in scoring goals for some time so we may not see a rout. Hopes remain pinned on teenage sensation Evan Ferguson to solve that particular problem.

The Gibraltar +4 handicap was tempting with the Green Boys not winning a competitive game by four or more goals since the defeat of their opponents here back in 2015.

However the smaller nations are known to struggle with the quick turnaround of games so could find this second game in three days a tough mountain to climb. Instead I like the odds of 2.05 for there to be more goals in the second half. As the visitors tire and the traditionally goal shy hosts look to turn the screw.

  • Selection: Second half to be the highest scoring half
  • Best Odds: 2.05 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 8/10

Switzerland vs Romania Preview

Euro Qualifiers, Monday, June 19th, 19:45 (UK)

Switzerland’s only home game so far in qualifying saw them sweep Israel aside 3-0. They remain firmly on course to appear in a third successive European Championships.

It is extremely unlikely we will see any complacency creep into the Swiss game. After all, head coach Murat Yakin challenged his side to “do better” following their MD1 5-0 thrashing of Belarus.

The world’s 12th ranked nation will aim to get qualification from Group I wrapped up as soon as possible. Defeating the side who look likely to be their closest rivals would be a massive step towards that goal.

Romania will be pleased with their solid start to qualification. Appearing at Germany 2024 would only be a fourth occasion in making the Euro finals.

After trips to Andorra and Kosovo, both outside FIFA’s top 100, this does represent a big step up in class for Edward Iordănescu’s men.

Switzerland vs Romania Best Bet

You have to go back to 2014 for the last time Switzerland lost a European Championship Qualifying fixture at home. A second half brace from Danny Welbeck giving England a 2-0 win in Basel.

Since then the Swiss have played nine times winning eight of those and scoring 30 goals in the process whilst conceding just five.

  • Selection: Switzerland to win and over 1.5 goals
  • Best Odds: 1.80 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 10/10

Turkey vs Wales Preview

Euro Qualifiers, Monday, June 19th, 19:45 (UK)

Turkey will be looking to record their first home win of the qualifying campaign here in Samsun. The 2-0 defeat to the group’s highest ranked side Croatia although not the end of the world was still a disappointment.

The hosts are managed by Stefan Kuntz who has an added incentive of ensuring the nation he represents qualify for the finals. The former Germany international would love to be a part of the tournament that is being staged in his home country.

We have a direct form line here to work with as Wales picked up an excellent draw in Croatia on MD1. Nathan Broadhead scored a 93rd minute equaliser on his international debut. Not only earning a precious point but also ending his side’s winless run of nine games. The longest since 2001.

The Welsh made it to the last 16 of Euro 2020 and are desperate for the opportunity to do even better in Germany. If they do make the finals that will be their third successive involvement in a major tournament.

Turkey vs Wales Best Bet

Turkey have had a turbulent couple of years. Regarded by many as the dark horses for Euro 2020 they crashed out of the group stages having lost all three games. Followed by narrowly missing out on qualification to the World Cup.

But with the oldest outfield player in the squad being just 29 it is clear to see the potential. However, with such relative inexperience comes flashes of excellence with moments of inconsistency in equal measure. As a consequence I am taking both teams to score here.

The Crescent-Stars have scored in nine of their last 10 home internationals. With both teams hitting the back of the net in six of those.

For Wales they have scored in 12 of their last 13 away qualifier and Nations League games. Both teams have featured on the scoresheet in seven of their last eight such fixtures.

  • Selection: Yes on Both Teams to Score
  • Best Odds: 2.00 Betfair)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Odds via William Hill and Betfair as at 20:30 June 15th 2023. Odds may now differ.
