France, Ligue 1, Sunday, February 11th, 16:05 (UK)
Montpellier remain winless in the league in 2024 after slipping to a 2-1 defeat at an inform Rennes side last weekend. Michel Der Zakarian has seen his side struggle for goals all campaign, scoring 20 times across their opening 20 fixtures. But what will alarm him is the ease his defence was cut open by the slick hosts at Roazhon Park.
That will be music to the ears of Lyon and, in particular, their top goalscorer Alexandre Lacazette. The visitors have spent much of the season at the bottom of Ligue 1 and, as a result, are on their third manager in Pierre Sage.
The club had only one once prior to Sage taking over, but six wins in his ten games in charge have at least moved them out of the drop zone. Three points clear of Metz in the relegation play-off spot and now level on points with their faltering hosts here.
Arguably, their biggest success of the season came last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Marseille in Derby des Olympiques. As has been the case for much of the campaign, captain Lacazette looked like their most threatening player, and so it came to pass as he scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game.
Like the home side, Lyon has only scored 20 goals this term, but Lacazette has exactly half of them. Only Wissam Ben Yedder of Monaco and PSG’s Kyllian Mbappe have more league goals to their name.
The 32-year-old has hit the back of the net in each of his last four Ligue 1 games for Lyon and has seven goals in his last six appearances. Despite suffering a 4-1 thrashing in the reverse fixture, Lacazette was once again on the scoresheet.
Montpellier vs Lyon Prediction odds via bet365 as at 10:00, February 6th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Akor Adamas is a major doubt for Lyon’s victory through injury, alongside Arnaud Ordin. Montpellier’s two internationals still away from domestic responsibilities in Bertaud and Musa-Al-Taamari will also miss the contest.
Gift Orban made his debut off the bench for Lyon at the weekend in their significant win over Marseille and could feature here once again from the off. It saw Rayan Cherki as an unused substitute at the weekend following reports of him linked with a Premier League move. January arrival Nemanja Matic also started at the weekend and is expected to keep his place in the team alongside Orban.
Montpellier possible starting lineup:
Lecomte; Hefti, Omeragic, Jullien, Sagnan; Mincarelli, Nordin, Chotard, Savanier, Adams; Khazri
Lyon possible starting lineup:
Lopes; Mata, Lovren, O’Brien; Tagliafico, Matic, Caqueret, Maitland-Niles; Cherki, Lacazette, Orban
