Matchday 30 in Serie A begins on Saturday lunchtime with a big match, so here’s Napoli vs Atalanta prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures previews, courtesy, as ever, of our Italian football expert Daniele Fisichella. The Neapolitans are only two points away from the Bergamaschi (whose match against Fiorentina, before the international break, was postponed), and, after stopping Inter’s winning streak, are looking to consolidate their ambitions to play in Europe next season.
Prediction: Napoli 2-2 Atalanta
With Italy set to have five teams next year thanks to the Champions League’s new format, this is a proper six-pointer to qualify for Europe’s top competition.
Italy, Serie A, Saturday, March 30th, 11:30 (UK)
Last year’s champions have undoubtedly benefited from their second managerial change of the season.
At last under Franco Calzona, a former assistant at the club of Maurizio Sarri and Luciano Spalletti, the team appears to have, slowly, rediscovered that self-belief and style of play that helped them triumph in Serie A in 2022/2023.
Perhaps we’ll never see Napoli playing as well as they did last year, but on matchday 29, they showed a remarkable fighting spirit in their 1-1 draw in Milan against Inter.
The hosts have only lost one (3-1 in Barcelona) of their last eight games and have always scored since Mazzarri’s last game in charge.
Of course, Napoli have been way below what was expected from them (they’ve got 29 points less in the table compared to the last campaign, the poorest title defence ever in Italy), but perhaps in the tail end of the campaign, and with no European football, they might start picking up better results.
Moreover, these could be Victor Osimhen’s last months under the Vesuvio before his likely move abroad in the summer.
The Nigerian striker, who missed the last league game because of a slight muscular injury, has been in top form since coming back from AFCON (five goals in the previous six appearances) and will want to end his experience in Serie A on a high.
In 2024, Napoli are the team in Italy who have drawn more games (six, in all competitions), and they have only kept one clean sheet (0-0 draw against Lazio in Rome) in the last 12 games.
The Partenopei have suffered all season to control the tempo of the games, and their defensive flaws, maximized by not having properly replaced last summer Kim Min-jae with a defender with similar peace and sense of anticipation, have been exposed.
Napoli have only kept two league clean sheets at the Maradona (three in all competitions) where they conceded the first goal in eight out of 14 Serie A games and only managed to rescue eight points out of a possible 24.
Atalanta have only won one of their last six games, but that success, 2-1 at home against Sporting Lisbon, who are top of the league in Portugal, is so far one of their biggest achievements in a very positive season.
In fact, not only are the Bergamaschi, alongside Fiorentina, the only Italian side still competing in all three competitions (a tough trip to Anfield awaits), but they’re just one point behind last season’s tally, with a game in hand.
Gianpiero Gasperini’s men have responded well to the tough run of fixtures (they played every three days for the past three weeks), and can finish the campaign on a high.
In fact, after this game, they’ll only face one team (Roma) occupying the top seven positions in the table till the end of the season.
The return to full fitness of Bilal Tourè and Ademola Lookman (in goal against both Bologna and Sporting), alongside the fine form Gianluca Scamacca (two goals in the last three) is a further reason for optimism for the visitors who have Serie A’s fourth-best attack with 51 goals scored (seven more than Napoli).
Atalanta have only failed to score three times this season away from home (against Torino, Bologna and Inter, three out of Italy’s four best defenses) but overall their record on the road has not been as good as in the past.
Furthermore, in the previous two campaigns, ‘La Dea’ always finished in the top four in the away table, whereas they’re currently 10th with a negative (-2) goal difference.
Gasperini’s men have only won four games away from Bergamo, all against teams fighting for relegation (Sassuolo, Verona, Empoli and Genoa), and have only kept three clean sheets.
Napoli vs Atalanta Prediction odds via bet365 as at 10:30, March 23rd, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Napoli are monitoring the conditions of their top goalscorer, Victor Osimhen, who missed the game against Inter because of a muscular problem. The striker did not play with Nigeria during the international break and remained in Napoli to continue his recovery.
If Osimhen is fit to start, he’ll replace Giacomo Raspadori, and Mario Rui should feature at left-back in place of Oliveira.
Atalanta will be without Teun Koopmeneirs who picked up an injury with his national team. He’ll be replaced by Pasalic or Miranchuk, with De Roon slotting into central midfield.
Charles De Ketelaere might start on the bench as he recently suffered from muscular fatigue.
If the Belgian won’t be fully fit, Scamacca will take his place up-front alongside Lookman. Holm and Ruggeri will be deployed as wing-backs.
Napoli possible starting lineup: Meret; Mario Rui, Juan Jesus, Rrahmani, Di Lorenzo; Traoré, Lobotka, Anguissa; Kvaratskhelia, Osimhen, Politano.
Atalanta possible starting lineup: Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Djmisti, Kolasinac; Holm, De Roon, Ederson, Ruggeri; Pasalic, De Ketelaere; Lookman.
