Netherlands vs Qatar Bet Builder: Tuesday, November 29th

I have pored over the stats from the opening two rounds of games in the 2022 World Cup to bring you my Netherlands vs Qatar bet builder tips. The Al Bayt Stadium plays host as the Oranje take on the Maroon in a game that concludes the group stage fixtures for both sides.

Netherlands vs Qatar Preview

World Cup Group A, Tuesday, November 29th, 15:00 (UK)

The Netherlands failed to impress on MD2 as they played out a disappointing 1-1 draw with Ecuador. But after two later goals sealed a 2-0 victory over Senegal in their World Cup opener, the Oranje need just a point against the already-eliminated World Cup hosts to progress to the knockout stages.

Louis van Gaal saw his side fail to capitalise on their sixth-minute lead on Friday. Ecuador arguably were the better side on the night, firing in 13 shots to the Netherlands’ two. Van Gaal followed up his comments pre-Senegal suggesting his side “don’t have the best players” with another damning assessment. The veteran manager lamented that his team needed to “improve a lot” before facing opponents of a “much higher level”.

A nervous opener against Ecuador led to Qatar becoming the first host nation to lose their opening match of a World Cup finals. However, despite an improved showing against Senegal, they became the first-ever host nation to be eliminated after two matches.

Félix Sánchez will be keen to ensure his side doesn’t set another unwanted record by losing all three group fixtures. They face an uphill task to do so against a Dutch side who need a win to have a chance of topping the group and a round of 16 clash against the runners-up of Group B.

Netherlands vs Qatar Stats & Facts

  • Qatar have now conceded five goals in the group stages – no host nation has ever conceded more in a single group stage, with South Africa also conceding five in 2010.
  • The Netherlands managed just two shots at goal in their 1-1 draw with Ecuador on MD2; that was the fewest efforts at goal by a European nation in a World Cup match on record (since 1966).
  • Only in 1978 (2-3 vs Scotland) have the Netherlands lost their final group stage match at the FIFA World Cup (excluding second group phases), winning four and drawing three.
  • The host country has won their final group stage match in five of the last six World Cup tournaments (including both Japan and Korea Republic as joint-hosts in 2002), with Russia losing 3-0 to Uruguay in 2018 in the other.

After such a lacklustre performance against Ecuador, Louis van Gaal will demand a response from his side against the hosts. Locked together with the South Americans on the same points, goals scored and conceded, the Netherlands will need to better their result here to avoid a clash with Group B winners – currently looking like England.

The Dutch have lost just one of their last 25 internationals winning an impressive 18. Although showing an improvement against Senegal, Qatar only started to pose an attacking threat once 2-0 down. The Netherlands have won all four of their FIFA World Cup matches against Asian sides, scoring 11 goals and conceding just once. With what’s on the line here against a side that seems incapable of challenging the better sides in the tournament, siding with a comfortable win for the favourites is a safe way to start this builder.

Cody Gakpo has been directly involved in at least one goal in his last five appearances for the Netherlands in all competitions scoring four times and swinging in a corner for Virgil Van Dijk to head home the only goal of the game against Belgium. For club and country in all competitions this season, Gakpo has been involved in 34 goals in 28 appearances, scoring 16 goals and assisting a further 18.

The much-coveted 23-year-old has put Netherlands 1-0 up in both of their World Cup matches in 2022. Only three players have ever scored in three consecutive World Cup appearances for the Dutch national side: Johan Neeskens (1974), Dennis Bergkamp (1994) and Wesley Sneijder (2010).

Taking Gakpo shots is a safer angle for our builder. This season he has fired 51 shots across 14 Eredivisie games at an average of 3.64 per game, 14 attempts in 5 UEL appearances at 2.80, 8 shots in 3 Nations League ties at 2.67 and 12 shots in 3 World Cup qualifiers at 4 per game.

  • Netherlands to win the match by 2 or more goals
  • Cody Gakpo over 1.5 shots in the match
  • Cody Gakpo over 0.5 shots on target in the match

Bet Builder odds: 2.10
