bettingexpert is on hand with Netherlands vs USA bet builder tips, with both planning on locking in a quarter final tie with one of the competition’s big boys.
Could it be one step too far for the USA? Or will the Netherlands flatter to deceive again, but this time to their detriment?
In this article:
World Cup Round of 16, Saturday, December 3rd, 15:00 (UK)
Doha’s Khalifa International Stadium plays host to an intriguing affair between the World Cup’s unluckiest nation and a youthful USA outfit with one eye on 2026. To navigate a group of England, Wales, and a capable Iran side and come out with an unbeaten five points represents a job well done for the Americans.
A round of 16 fixture will go down as an achievement for Gregg Berhalter and his group from the States. Iran posed the final obstacle and were swept aside on the back of an impressive performance when the pressure was on.
It was Christian Pulisic’s goal that swung the tie in favour of the Americans. That’s now six-goal involvement in his last nine appearances for the USA. Leaving the field soon after his goal will be a talking point for all involved on Saturday, including the opposition’s dressing room. However, the news coming out of the camp is that he’s firmly on track to line up and bellow the national anthem on Saturday.
On the other hand, the Netherlands flattered to deceive throughout the group stages despite posting two victories against Senegal and Qatar. Although mightily unlucky in this competition, as previously mentioned, they remain unbeaten in the Qatari edition. The three-time World Cup finalists have never mustered enough to win the competition. No other nation has appeared in more finals without holding Jules Rimet aloft.
If the performances from Group A are set to continue, then rest assured the famed silverware won’t be heading back for a lap of Amsterdam on an open-top bus parade. The 0.87xG vs 0.67xG in Senegal’s favour in the opener tells a thousand words, as do the two shots to 15 at goal in the 1-1 draw with Ecuador.
It’s the knockouts. Plenty is on the line. So, of course, this will be approached differently by both dugouts. Therefore, it’s also essential to be mindful from a betting perspective. There will be a tentative approach from both until the deadlock is broken. Yet, given what either side has mustered during the competition, I’m not fully confident we’re in for a blockbuster affair.
At 1.61 for Under 2.5 goals, it’s a nice place to start. This has landed for all six games involving these teams in Qatar. In the hope we see an opening 45 minutes where those on the field get a feel of each other without landing a decisive blow, let’s add to the Unders theme – a selection that’ll go hand in hand with Under 2.5 goals.
There have been six 0-0 score lines at this World Cup following Croatia and Belgium’s entertaining match-up that ended honours even. Romelu Lukaku somehow kept it goalless – more of the same from the frontline of Saturday’s pairing will do for us here. Including Under 0.5 goals in the first half drags us up to 2.75.
With the Netherlands not quite firing in forward areas and Memphis Depay lagging below 100% sharpness, the unders angle feels like a wise way in. For the USA, Pulisic is in the same boat as Depay amidst a forward line that lacks the quality needed to compete at the highest level on the international stage.
It may be the most anti-football punt you take during the tournament, but it’s one that may threaten to pay out come Saturday evening.
