Vincent Kompany’s Burnley prepare to host the champions and his former side, Manchester City in the season’s curtain-raiser. It’s an eye-catching fixture and one that I believe could produce the first upset of the season.
The season aims for both teams are clear – if a little different. Manchester City are aiming to win a record fourth successive top flight title and a sixth in seven years. Burnley just want to remain in the division after securing a return to the top flight.
They could not have been handed a tougher start. Burnley have lost each of their last 11 games against City in all competitions, conceding 40 and scoring just once. They have won their opening Premier League match of the season on just two of eight previous attempts. City, meanwhile, have done just that in 12 of the last 14 seasons.
But this means a lot more to the hosts than the visitors and Burnley will have the full backing of the Turf Moor crowd.
History is on their side.
Since 1998/99, backing newly-promoted sides playing their first home game in the Premier League has provided +24.06 units of profit in the 1×2 market. That’s +32.08% ROI and is spread across 75 matches.
The record extends to the Asian handicap market. Backing newly-promoted sides in their first home Premier League match since 2003/04 has brought in +10.11 units of profit and 16.9% ROI. Let’s stick with that here against a City side that didn’t look super sharp last weekend.

Andoni Iraola and his Bournemouth side are the most intriguing team in the Premier League right now. We just know what we’ll get from the Basque-born boss and a streaky Cherries side.
It’s been a promising preseason with plenty of intriguing acquisitions. Alex Scott represents the biggest outlay and an interesting option in the middle. He won’t be available for this one but we may see a new midfield acquisition for the visitors. Edson Alvarez could take the middle for the Hammers as they begin their post-Declan Rice era.
If last season is anything to go by, it should be a straightforward one for David Moyes’ side. They did the double over the Cherries with an aggregate scoreline of 6-0. Moyes has only lost one top flight match against Bournemouth in his career and that came for Sunderland way back in 2017.
But I’m expecting things to change. The Hammers are looking light in several areas of the pitch with new signings yet to be finalised. They look there for the taking for a Bournemouth side on the up and ready to start a new era. Our old friend, the new manager bounce comes into play here too.

It’s a new era for Tottenham Hotspur as Ange Postecoglou attempts to navigate a post-Harry Kane world. At the time of writing, the England captain is reportedly Bavaria-bound to swap the Premier League for the Bundesliga after 10 seasons as Tottenham’s starting striker.
As outlined in the 2023/24 Premier League Betting Value Report Cards, I fully expect Tottenham to have an excellent season. Kane’s departure does not change that but as I said, it will take them a while to get going.
This is a new-look team with a different playing style and as teams like Arsenal and Manchester United have learned in the last few years, a trip to Brentford rarely bodes well for teams going through this process.
Brentford will be without their own big-name English forward, Ivan Toney but should have enough to get by here.

The final match of this Premier League acca sees two of the big seven face off in what is the fixture of the weekend.
Chelsea vs Liverpool is an eye-catching fixture that has produced some pretty dire matches in recent years. Each of the last four meetings between these two in the Premier League have finished goalless. No fixture in English football history has produced five successive 0-0 draws before so we should see at least one goal in this one.
Mauricio Pochettino will take charge of his first league match for Chelsea after returning to the Premier League over the summer. He has a dire record against the Reds. Of the sides he’s faced at least 10 times in the dugout, against only Real Madrid has he got a worse record. Pochettino has also won just one of his previous 11 managerial meetings with Jurgen Klopp which came way back in 2017.
I don’t see that changing here. Chelsea are still very much a work in progress – whether Moises Caicedo chooses to join them or not.
