Newcastle vs Crystal Palace: Toon Real Deal

England, Premier League, Saturday October 21st, 15:00 (UK)

Maybe last season was a one-off.

Aston Villa’s highline suited them.

Three losses in as many games against Man City, Liverpool and Brighton show they cannot do it against the best sides in the league.

They won’t be able to balance domestic duty with their return to Europe.

They don’t blow sides away.

Some of the doubts I have had about Eddie Howe’s (and Jason Tindall’s) Newcastle, but they just keep proving me wrong this season. I think it is time to admit they are just a great side.

The 1-0 against Brentford started a run of seven games unbeaten, picking up a point at San Siro, followed by an 8-0 thumping at Bramall Lane, a win over Man City and a 4-1 thrashing of Paris Saint Germain. That’s not a bad three-week period.

Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace represented a stern test, a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in the middle of a three-game unbeaten run, picking up points against Forest and Fulham in between.

Beating an out-of-sorts Man Utd was a scalp, but one goal in four and a half hours of Premier League football depicts a significant lack of creativity.

Combining a home win with over one goal to be scored here appeals because as long as Newcastle win, it only rules out the 1-0 scoreline.

  • Selection: Newcastle Win and Over 1 Goals
  • Best Odds: 1.70
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 5/10

Brentford vs Burnley: Bad Luck Bees

England, Premier League, Saturday October 21st, 15:00 (UK)

It is easy to forget Burnley were promoted from the Championship as champions, having broken the 100-point barrier.

The Clarets bagged 87 goals, the most in the division, by playing expansive possession-based football as per the orders of Vincent Kompany.

The problem is Kompany’s adaptation to the Premier League has been slow.

Tottenham scored five, Chelsea hit them for four, and Man City and Aston Villa scored three.
The Clarets are yet to keep a clean sheet in the league – their only one coming in the league cup.

Only the 1-0 defeat against Manchester United failed to see Burnley’s opposition beat them and the game to feature two or more goals.

Next on the roster is Brentford, a side who have been unfortunate this campaign. According to the underlying data via Opta, the Bees should be in 8th, not 15th.

Thomas Frank’s side only lost twice at home last campaign, Arsenal and Newcastle. Their performances this season certainly warrant more.

  • Selection: Brentford Win and Over 1 Goals
  • Best Odds: 2.15
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 5/10

Nottingham Forest vs Luton: Hats off for the Tricky Trees

England, Premier League, Saturday October 21st, 15:00 (UK)

They say a point a game will keep you in the Premier League.

The last sides to get relegated, having hit the 38-point threshold, were Birmingham (39) and Blackpool (39) in the 2010/11 season over a decade ago.

Coincidently, this is the exact total Nottingham Forest finished in the last campaign. The Tricky Trees are currently averaging 1.125 points per game. Their tally of eight puts them within two points of five teams, from Everton in 16th to Chelsea in 11th.

The daylight between Steve Cooper’s side and the drop is five points, and not entirely due to his side’s improvement but the terrible standard at the bottom of the table.

The three promoted sides have won a grand total of nine points between them, and Sheffield United are yet to win.

Luton’s goal difference is what is keeping them on the right side of the dotted line, but averaging half a point per game; they will be fighting for their lives all campaign.

  • Selection: Nottingham Forest Win and Over 1 Goals
  • Best Odds: 2.05
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 5/10
