Forest vs Spurs: Trust Ange, mate

England, Premier League, Friday December 15th 20:00 (UK)

They say Steve Cooper is never more than a bad result away from the sack.

A point in Wolves afforded him another game in the Nottingham Forest dugout, at least, but the former Swansea boss remains the bookies’ favourite in the sack race.

Cooper switched from a back four to a five for the trip to the Molineux, and he must have been delighted when the full-backs combined to open the scoring. It was Neco Williams’ cross that was nodded home by his opposite wing-back Harry Toffolo.

Cooper may stick with that five-man defence, but Tottenham are an entirely different proposition to Wolves.

Ange Postecoglou’s side ended a run of five games and four defeats with an emphatic win over an out-of-sorts Newcastle.

Spurs have taken 16 points from the 24 on offer against current bottom-half teams, dropping points to Brentford, Wolves, and Chelsea. Siding with the visitors to edge a goal-heavy clash on Friday appeals here.

Burnley vs Everton: Burnley Bitten in the Arse

England, Premier League, Saturday December 16th 17:30 (UK)

Sean Dyche returns to Turf Moor in Saturday’s feature game in the Premier League.

The former Burnley boss won two promotions to the top flight during his decade-long stint at the club before getting the sack following their relegation in 2022.

He took charge at Everton in January 2023 and steered the Toffees clear of relegation, and despite a ten-point deduction, he has built on that momentum this campaign. His current side may be only four points above the drop, but if it wasn’t for the off-field antics, Everton would be in the top half.

There is a little bit of irony in the fact that the new ownership at Burnley got rid of him with the view to move the club in a different direction stylistically.

It must be said that Vincent Kompany did a stellar job in the Championship. The Belgian boss inherited an ageing squad and was tasked with simultaneously reducing the wage bill whilst launching a title bid, both of which he did to great success.

He guided the Clarets to 101 points in the second tier, winning the league playing possession-based football. The issue is that he has not adapted to the step-up in class, which is why Burnley is averaging half a point a game.

Yes, the club is back in the Premier League, but playing the way they are, it is unlikely they will have retained their position come May. This is happening as Dyche is reconsolidating Everton as a top-flight club. And that is the irony.

I fully expect Everton to bully Burnley on Saturday, and backing an away victory is the bet.

Liverpool vs Man Utd: Rinse and Repeat

England, Premier League, Sunday December 17th 17:30 (UK)

Remember what happened when these sides met at Anfield last season?

Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United was the final score, and given the current state of both clubs, it is not out of the realm of possibility on Sunday.

It is fair to say the Reds have not been playing their best stuff recently. Since the 3-0 win over Brentford, they rode their luck at the Etihad, scored two late on against Fulham, laboured to victory at Bramall Lane and came from behind to snatch it at Selhurst Park.

Despite this cluster of mediocrity, they have only dropped two points from the 12 on offer, and this knack of winning when you’re not at your best is – dare I say – the sort of thing champions do. Cliche.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had the small matter of a Europa League game to attend to on Thursday. Small in the sense that Liverpool had already qualified for the knockout stages, so their supremo could rest and rotate with an eye cast to the hectic festive schedule.

It means the majority of the big hitters come into this one well rested which is bad news for the Red Devils.

They followed the Bournemouth humiliation by losing to Bayern Munich meaning they finished bottom of their Champions League group.

  • Selection: Liverpool to Win and Over 1 Goal
  • Best Odds: 1.36
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 10/10
