Kevin De Bruyne made his eagerly anticipated return to action for Manchester City in their 5-0 FA Cup rout of Huddersfield.
It took the creative maestro all of 17 minutes after coming off the bench to set up a goal for compatriot Jeremy Doku.
Given the importance of this trip to St James’ Park, it would not be a surprise to see Pep Guardiola play him from the off against Newcastle.
His City side is five points off the pace, but victory here would see them move within striking distance of Liverpool with the Reds out of action this weekend.
Therefore, I am willing to take a punt on De Bruyne, grabbing an assist at odds of 2.75. The Belgian has topped the top-flight assist chart in four of the last seven seasons, setting up 70 goals across those four campaigns with totals of 16, 20, 16 and 18.
His best asset is his passing, which is why his best tallies have come alongside an out-and-out striker, previously Sergio Aguero and now Erling Haaland. Although the latter is also a doubt to play here, the importance of this match in terms of the title won’t be lost on City’s manager, so the pair (KDB and Haaland) could well both be in the XI on Saturday evening.

Everton vs Aston Villa: Goodison Goals

I am sure many are intrigued to see how long Aston Villa can maintain their title challenge, and that is not to sound condescending; in fact, it is the opposite.
Unai Emery inherited a side sleepwalking towards relegation, yet in a little over the space of a year, and with only a few acquisitions, the Villa boss has wholly transformed the Villans. In 2023 (the calendar year), only Manchester City (93) won more points than Villa (85).
Sean Dyche has transformed Everton in a similar vein. The turnaround has not been as dramatic as Emery at Villa, but Dyche does not have the same budget.
The 10-point deduction must also be taken into account; without it, the Toffees would be three points off the top half. But they do have it, which means they could kick off on Sunday in the relegation zone, depending on the result at Turf Moor on Friday evening.
Everton will be hoping to end a five without a win. The stalemate at Selhurst Park ended a run of four straight defeats, and that followed a run of four wins on the spin.
While the form is streaky, the Toffees have been finding the net consistently domestically at Goodison. The 3-0 defeat against Manchester United was the only time they have failed to score at home since mid-September.
Only Man City have scored more goals than Villa (43). Sunday’s visitors have only kept one clean sheet on their travels in the league, conceding 1.90 goals per game. Siding with goals is the play here.

Manchester United vs Tottenham: Too much made of absentees?

Tottenham head to Old Trafford without talisman Son Heung-Min (international duty). This game also looks to have come too soon for James Maddison and Cristian Romero, though the latter has ensured he is ready to play this weekend.
Micky van de Ven is back at Ange Poscegolu’s disposal, and not a minute too soon, with Ben Davies unavailable.
Even with key players missing, Tottenham are the more appealing bet at Old Trafford.
Spurs have won five of their last six, their only defeat coming against Brighton, and boast a strong record against the division’s biggest and best sides.
They beat Manchester United in the reverse, Liverpool and Newcastle, and drew with Arsenal and Manchester City. Villa came from behind to beat them, and Chelsea thumped a side that ended the game with nine men, but those are the only two blemishes.
The Red Devils win over League One side Wigan in the FA Cup was only their third since November, which is why they cannot be backed at 2.20. For context, they went off longer against Chelsea and Aston Villa, so I wonder if too much has been made of Spurs’ absentees.
