Top-flight football is back in England and so are our Premier League best bets. I’ve got four Premier League best bets ahead of the opening weekend that cover matches involving Tottenham, Leicester and Manchester City. There are some fascinating subplots across the league so let’s not delay and get to the tips

In this article:

Leeds vs Wolves Preview

Saturday, August 6th, 15:00 (UK)

We start with Leeds United hosting Wolves at Elland Road. A lot has changed over the summer for the hosts and manager Jesse Marsch. This new-look team will be without the departed Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips who start their careers at Barcelona and Manchester City respectively.

They narrowly avoided relegation last term after a slow start. They failed to win any of their first six Premier League matches and remained in the bottom 6 the entire season.

I expect them to struggle again this campaign starting with this match. Wolves arrive without a couple of big names. Raul Jimenez will miss the match and a couple of weeks with a knee injury. He’s a loss but Bruno Lage’s side should survive. They have a fine record against Leeds and haven’t lost any of their four most recent visits to Elland Road, winning three.

Leeds vs Wolves Best Bet

That’s why I like the look of Wolves in this match. The bookies have given them a quarter of a goal in the Asian lines. That’s generous considering how settled this Wolves team and how many changes have been made to the personnel at Elland Road. Raphinha will be a massive miss this season, starting here.

  • Selection: Wolves +0.25 (AH)
  • Best Odds: 1.92 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 8/10

Tottenham vs Southampton Preview

Saturday, August 6th, 15:00 (UK)

It’s the opening match of what many people – myself included – think will be a massive season for Tottenham Hotspur. Antonio Conte has been busy building on the momentum gained by that top 4 finish last campaign. Quality has been added throughout the team with new signings across the pitch.

But the old guard will be standing up here. Summer signings Richarlison and Yves Bissouma will both miss out here but we should see a first Premier League start for Ivan Perisic. Expect a big performance from him at left wing-back.

They take on a Southampton side for which very little has changed. There hasn’t been a major overhaul at St. Mary’s after last season’s 15th-placed finish. They’ve lost a few and elected for youth with some intriguing signings from clubs across Europe. Expect starts for Gavin Bazunu, Armel Bella-Kotchap and Romeo Lavia.

Tottenham vs Southampton Best Bet

I’m expecting goals, goals and goals as Tottenham take on Southampton in North London. The majority of them should come for the home side in what I think will be a dominant victory. The Asian line of -1.5 was tempting but I’m instead turning to goals. Over 3 represents excellent value at 2.03 given Spurs’ numbers.

  • Selection: Over 3.0 total goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.03 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Leicester vs Brentford Preview

Sunday, August 7th, 14:00 (UK)

There is uncertainty in the air at the King Power after a lethargic summer transfer window that has seen no new additions. The season isn’t waiting for the Foxes with this opening match against Brentford scheduled for Sunday.

Brentford will aim to take advantage of that uncertainty in their quest to avoid the dreaded second-season troubles. Thomas Frank can no longer call upon Christian Eriksen but the Bees should be fine.

Leicester vs Brentford Best Bet

I expect goals aplenty for both sides on the opening day. Both teams scored in 68% of Leicester’s Premier League matches last season. That was the highest in the division by some distance. I’m adding that plus over 2.5 goals to my betting card this weekend.

  • Selection: BTTS and Over 2.5 Goals
  • Best Odds: 2.10 (10Bet)
  • Stakes: 6/10

West Ham vs Manchester City Preview

Sunday, August 7th, 14:00 (UK)

The big match of the opening weekend sees West Ham host Manchester City in London. All eyes will be on the striking positions for both teams after major acquisitions over the summer. There is intrigue over the Hammers’ new forward, Gianluca Scamacca.

We’ve already seen Man City’s new striker in action. Erling Haaland played in last weekend’s Community Shield and will surely start here. City have wrung the changes in order to sign the Dortmund man with Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling making way.

History suggests that City will do well in this match. They’re unbeaten in their last 13 Premier League meetings with West Ham. They have, however, struggled on the opening day of late. City have lost three of their last six opening league matches of the season including a 1-0 defeat to Spurs last campaign.

West Ham vs Man City Best Bet

I’m counting on City struggling here. I think the value comes when backing West Ham on the Asian handicap market. The bookies have given them +1.5 goals for this match which feels generous considering City’s performance against Liverpool last weekend. Expect the London Stadium to be loud and for a solid performance from the hosts.

  • Selection: West Ham +1.5 (AH) (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.87 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Best odds available as at 15:15 on August 4th 2022. Odds may now differ.
