Premier League Best Bets: September 16th-17th

We’re back with more Premier League best bets ahead of this weekend’s matches. There are seven Premier League matches taking place across three days this weekend. We start with Aston Villa vs Southampton and finish with two matches on Sunday. It’s the final fixture for these teams ahead of the upcoming international break so let’s get to our Premier League best bets this weekend.

In this article:

Aston Villa vs Southampton Preview

Friday, September 16th, 20:00 (UK)

Aston Villa host Southampton for what will be an important match at the bottom of the table. The Saints have started well with their young players starring in the Premier League thus far. Seven points from their opening six puts them comfortably in midtable.

Aston Villa are outside of the relegation zone only on goals scored after winning only one of their opening six. That victory was their only one in 10 Premier League matches stretching back to last season. The 1-1 draw with Manchester City last time out was an improvement but things will need to change if Steven Gerrard wants to keep the pressure off.

The Saints have had the better of this fixture in the past. They’ve lost only three of their last 14 Premier League matches against Aston Villa – although two of those defeats have come in the last three meetings between the sides.

Aston Villa vs Southampton Best Bet

Despite the past results and recent form, Aston Villa come into this one as the favourites. It feels a little harsh so I think the visitors carry the value. I’m adding Southampton to win or draw double chance to a bet builder to create my selection here.

I’m also looking at the goals market. None of Southampton’s last four. Only three of the 12 total matches these two sides have played this season in the Premier League have had over four goals in them. Under 4 goals and a Saints win/draw double chance takes these odds well above evens.

  • Selection: Southampton to Win/Draw Double Chance and Under 4 Goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.30 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 6/10

Wolves vs Man City Preview

Saturday, September 17th, 12:30 (UK)

Wolves host Man City as they aim to recapture what was once an impressive record against the Citizens. They did the double over City back in 2019-20 but Pep Guardiola’s side have dominated since. Man City have won their last four league matches against Wolves by a combined scoreline of 13-3.

Things have steadily improved for Wolves so far this season. They’re now unbeaten in three and that win over Southampton a few weeks back was their first Premier League victory since April. It was long overdue and came courtesy of a goal from Daniel Podence. That was only their third goal all season but they’ll hope for the best from their new signing, Diego Costa.

Man City are now 21 away league matches without a defeat. It’s already a club record but one that could be in trouble over the next few weeks. After Wolves, City travel to Liverpool and Arsenal in consecutive matches. They’ve drawn three of their last four away league matches so there’s a feeling that not everything is right for them away from home.

Wolves vs Man City Best Bet

City won’t be too worried about that record. They still have the quality to see things out here but Wolves are always stubborn. Bruno Lage’s men are returning to old habits scoring few goals but doing a good job of keeping them out. A total of four goals have gone in their last five Premier League matches. The goal line here is way up at 3.0 which feels far too high. Especially considering City are playing a tough Champions League match on Wednesday.

  • Selection: Under 3 Goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.94 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 10/10

Newcastle vs Bournemouth Preview

Saturday, September 17th, 15:00 (UK)

Newcastle host Bournemouth for a fixture they have dominated in years gone by. The Magpies have only lost two of their last eight Premier League matches against Bournemouth. History points to an exciting match too. Both teams have scored in six of their last seven meetings. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in each of the last five.

But Newcastle’s season has stalled. They’ve only lost one match this season but they haven’t won since the opening day. It’s four draws in five matches for Eddie Howe’s men as he prepares to face his former club. The Magpies have drawn their last two at home. Only once before have Newcastle gone three straight league matches without winning since Howe took charge.

Managerless Bournemouth wrapped up their second win of the season last time out. That 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest could have a big impact on the relegation battle this campaign. They’re leaking goals freely. Bournemouth have conceded 18 times already. No side has ever conceded more goals after the opening six matches of a Premier League season.

Newcastle vs Bournemouth Best Bet

That’s why I’m backing goals here. History suggests we’ll see a fair few and recent performances can’t convince otherwise. Bournemouth have struggled for goals at times this season and the underlying data suggests they may have problem finding the net here. That’s why I’m shying away from BTTS, as has been the case when these sides have met in the past. Instead, I’m adding a Newcastle victory to the bet to bring those odds up.

  • Selection: Newcastle Win and Over 2.5 Goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.25 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 8/10

Tottenham vs Leicester Preview

Saturday, September 17th, 17:30 (UK)

Tottenham vs Leicester should be an entertaining one for the neutral. Spurs have had the better of the recent matches but excitement is usually what we expect. The scores were 3-1 and 3-2 in their meetings last season. These sides have met over 115 times in competitive matches. There has only been one game that finished 0-0 and that was back in 1948. Their last 11 meetings in the Premier League have produced an average of 4.3 goals per game.

Spurs will be looking for a response. They lost in midweek in what was their return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2019-20 season. The score was 2-0 to Sporting Lisbon out in Portugal so they’ll be eager to get back to winning ways here.

There aren’t many better opponents on paper. The Foxes have lost five in a row and have only taken one point all season. The last time Leicester City went their first seven league matches of a top-flight without securing a win was back in 1984. It’s uncharted territory for manager Brendan Rodgers who has lost six on the trot in the league for the first time.

Tottenham vs Leicester Best Bet

Goals are the obvious pick here but it’s too hard to ignore. Spurs have struggled for goals in recent weeks but Leicester have kept one clean sheet in their last 29 Premier League away matches. The goal line is set at 3.0 but I’m still taking it.

  • Selection: Over 3 Goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.95 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 8/10

Odds as at 17:00 on September 14th 2022. Odds may now differ.
