The champions head to Burnley for this year’s Premier League curtain raiser. Burnley won the second tier last season with Vincent Kompany at the helm. The former Manchester City captain has made quite the impression in his fledgling managerial career. Friday night signals his first foray into the Premier League in this capacity.
Manchester City hammered Burnley 6-0 in the FA Cup last season, and they have a sublime record against The Clarets. Pep Guardiola’s side are looking to become the first team to win four titles in a row. They should dominate proceedings against Burnley.
Pep Guardiola’s side’s matches averaged the fewest tackles in the league last season. City favour shifting the ball to obtain numerical superiority in certain areas of the pitch rather than running directly at the opposition. The average of 26.53 tackles per City match was 4.32 fewer than other teams.
There were just 27 tackles when Burnley rocked up to the Etihad last season. The last ten meetings between these sides have seen an average of 24.3 tackles per game, and this bet has landed in the previous four at Turf Moor.

Arsenal will be buoyed by their Community Shield victory over Manchester City. Arteta’s men fell away at the end of last season after leading the title race for much of the season. They have strengthened their squad this summer, but their playing principles will remain the same.
Nottingham Forest survived their first season back in the Premier League after sticking with Steve Cooper. They could well kick on this season and move further up the table. However, an opening day tip to the Emirates looks a tall order.
The Gunners were a revelation last season, and their controlled possession-based style meant that their matches saw the second-fewest throws in the Premier League. Arsenal games saw an average of 33.61 throws per game; only Manchester City matches saw less. This is well below the league average of 37.95 per game.
Nottingham Forest beat Arsenal at The City Ground and lost 5-0 at the Emirates. Both of those matches saw very few throws. There were 32 when they met in London, and 25 when they met in Nottingham, so expect very few once again despite the new rules related to additional time.

Newcastle United took a huge stride towards being eventual competitors for the title last season. They secured Champions League football in the first full season under Eddie Howe and Saudi ownership. They have strengthened their squad this summer, so the future continues to look bright in the north east.
Aston Villa enjoy a successful campaign of their own. Unai Emery replaced Steve Gerrard during the season, and results drastically improved. They have also brought in several high-profile players this summer. Pau Torres has been brought in to strengthen the defence, while Moussa Diaby should add more dynamism in attack.
Eddie Howe’s side averaged 16 tackles per game last season, the 6th fewest in the Premier League. The average number of tackles for a team in a league match was 17.01. They had just 15 when they welcomed Villa to the north-east last campaign.
Villa’s opponents in away matches last season averaged 15.2 tackles per game. This rises to 16.3 if only the matches on the road under Emery are included, but that’s still below the mark required for this bet to land.

Brentford had a successful 2nd season in the top flight, and they will want to build on that despite the absence of Ivan Toney. Thomas Frank’s team were incredibly tough to beat, particularly when playing in front of their own fans. They lost just two league matches at the Gtech Community Stadium last season.
There is a more positive outlook surrounding Tottenham despite the looming questions over Harry Kane’s future. Ange Postecoglou is viewed as a long-term appointment, and there have been signs of a more positive style throughout pre-season.
Brentford’s home matches last season averaged 14.05 goal kicks per game. There were just eight goal kicks when Spurs travelled here last season; three for Brentford and five for Spurs.
Tottenham’s matches saw even fewer goal kicks, with an average of 13.87 per game. Harry Kane seems unlikely to start at this stage, and without a focal point in attack for Spurs, this number could drop even further. Moreover, this bet has landed in four of the last five meetings between the sides.

Chelsea stumbled to a 12th-place finish last season. They’ve had three managers in the last campaign, but there is a feeling that Todd Boehly and the Chelsea ownership consortium have learned from their mistakes. Mauricio Pochettino has been brought in to knit together this group of talented players. Their opener against Liverpool is the perfect opportunity to put previous worries to bed.
Liverpool suffered a disappointment of their own last season. They rallied late on to make a charge for a Champions League place, but their poor start proved costly as they finished 5th in the Premier League.
Here we are backing under 12.5 shots in the match for Chelsea. Liverpool were up to the standards they had set in previous years under Klopp last season, but they only conceded an average of 11.26 shots per away match.
This should prove to be a tight game, and Chelsea are unlikely to have swathes of possession. They have had 12 shots or fewer in their last five meetings with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Over this period, they are averaging 9.8 shots per game.

Manchester United welcome a Wolves side that is reeling from the departure of Julen Lopetegui to Old Trafford. United had a largely successful 22/23 season. They picked up silverware under Erik Ten Hag and secured a place in the Champions League, but they were some way off controlling matches. The Red Devils will be hoping the summer signings go someway to achieving that.
Wolves had a solid season after Lopetegui came in, but he has since left the club on the eve of the Premier League. It’s a tumultuous time at the club, and they could be in for a long season if the problems aren’t resolved quickly.
Manchester United beat Wolves 2-0 at home last season and dominated the game from start to finish. They had 27 attempts throughout the match and were unfortunate not to score more. Rasmus Hojlund is unfit for this one, so without someone to aim at in the box, United may have to rain shots down about the Wolves’ goal once again. Ten Hag’s side averaged the 4th most shots at home last season.
It’s difficult to assess Wolves’ performance with Gary O’Neil brought in just days before this one. However, his Bournemouth side conceded more shots per away game than any other side last season.
