Arsenal extended their lead over Man City on the top of the table to five points, after winning their game in hand against Everton last night. The Gunners put four past Sean Dyche’s men and now have amassed 60 points from 25 games.

It was also a second successive clean sheet for Mikel Arteta’s side and we had a discussion with former Arsenal man Mikael Silvestre about Aaron Ramsdale’s contribution to the campaign, as well as the impending return of Gabriel Jesus.

Aaron Ramsdale is underrated – he has done well when called on duty

When asked which player in this Arsenal side he felt was underrated or overlooked, Silvestre nominated Aaron Ramsdale. The reasoning behind that being that as Arsenal dominate possession, Ramsdale is not tested as often as other goalkeepers. Silvestre, however, maintains that the English shot-stopper has stepped up when required, like he did against Leicester and Everton recently.

“Maybe Ramsdale. He’s in a position where he is not tested a lot.”

“Arsenal has a lot of possession, so it is hard in your position to create something. He has a strong back four as well. But nevertheless, whenever he has been called on duty, he has done really well.”

“If Arsenal was to win the Premier League, you always need a strong goalkeeper. Right now he’s doing the job properly.”

Silvestre also praised Ramsdale’s distribution and noted how important it is to the way Arsenal play.

“Also his distribution is really good. That’s one part of Arsenal, quick transitions. He’s been able to get the ball out to Saka and Martinelli on either side.”

Silvestre also discussed Gabriel Jesus’ recovery, saying that Arsenal have missed him but have also been able to cope well without him. Still, he believes that the Brazilian’s return will be at a very crucial time for the Gunners and positive development for them.

“Gabriel Jesus was missed for sure and I think the team coped well without him.”

“The fact that he’s coming back in the final stages of the competitions brings confidence into the squad. He settled in a fast manner at Arsenal, forming connections with his teammates.”

“It’s a big plus at the right moment. Crucial time with three months left for the Premier League table. It’ll be very positive for Arsenal when he’s back.”

Further elaborating on what his return will bring to the table, Silvestre mentioned that Jesus’ versatility, when compared to Eddie Nketiah, is what will be a big advantage for Arsenal.

“I think he has the decision making, the quickness in his movevent. He’s a little bit sharper than Eddie and he can twist and turn a bit faster still.”

“He’s a proper threat for every defence because he’s drifting wide and then he comes into the box and becomes a number 9, a finisher in the six yard box, which wasn’t the case at City. He improved over the last few months, before he got injured.”

The Frenchman concluded that Arsenal and Mikel Arteta need Jesus’ motivation and desire to win the Premier League.

“His motivation, his desire fits what Arsenal will need in this period of time when they want to win it.”
