We will get some answers about Rennes after this match. They are either going to get back on track and be a threat to finish in the top six or look like mailing in their campaign and finishing the season on the beach. They have struggled in recent weeks, with key league defeats versus Lorient and Monaco really hampering their European chances. The Brittany outfit also lost against PSG in the French Cup semi-final. The crux of their problems has been conceding goals, with Rennes only keeping two clean sheets in their last ten Ligue 1 fixtures.
BTTS – Yes looks like a big price at 1.80. Toulouse are the sort of team who will carry a threat in matches like this where they are the clear underdog. They can make the most of space in behind and cause problems to the Rennes backline. I would much rather take BTTS – Yes than over 2.5 goals because both goalkeepers Steve Mandanda and Guillaume Restes have enjoyed strong seasons. Toulouse have kept successive clean sheets vs Clermont and Strasbourg but prior to that failed to shut out any side in eight straight games.
Rennes have a plethora of attacking options but have generally lacked a stand-out striker to nail down goals this season. That is what has enabled attacking midfielder Benjamin Bourigeaud to lead their scoring charts with 13 goals scored in all competitions. Of course, a significant chunk of those goals have been from the penalty spot and he is their primary taker from 12 yards.
Bourigeaud has scored eight of his nine penalties this season, which is an impressive record. He is reliable from the spot but he does also get himself into some decent positions from open play. The likes of Kalimuendo, Gouiri, and Ludovic Blas are all at a shorter price to score than him here, which feels slightly unfair. Rennes have obtained the joint most penalties in Ligue 1 this season (9) and they are facing a Toulouse side who have committed the most fouls and obtained the most yellow cards.
Toulouse striker Thijs Dallinga has been a reliable scorer in the last two seasons and leads their scoring charts with 16 goals netted in all competitions. He is a massive threat and should be even more dangerous in a match like this where he’ll have space to get in behind. It is a surprise to see Dallinga as big as 3.50 to score anytime. This can only be because Toulouse are a significant underdog. However, as aforementioned, there is not too much to fear from this Rennes defence, which keeps giving away chances.
Dallinga lost penalty-taking duty to Vincent Sierro after missing twice towards the back end of 2023. However, Sierro is suspended for this fixture, so you would imagine that Dallinga will get the honours from the spot. Just like Rennes, Toulouse has also obtained the joint most penalties in Ligue 1 this season (9), so this could become a significant factor in the match. Dallinga is a huge threat from open play primarily, though, as his scoring record suggests. A penalty would be a pure bonus but we are mostly backing him for his poaching and finishing instincts.
