The top of the table clashes continue in Serie A and this week, our Italian football expert, Daniele Fisichella, has prepared Roma vs Juventus prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.
Prediction: Roma 0-0 Juventus
Only six points separate the Giallorossi from the Bianconeri as the visitors only need two more wins to secure participation in next year’s Champions League.
Roma are in the middle of a grueling run of fixtures and will have to resort to some turnover ahead of the Europa League semi-final second leg against Bayer Leverkusen.
Italy, Serie A, Sunday, May 5th, 19:45 (UK)
Enthusiasm is high in Italy’s capital as Roma’s results have dramatically improved since the arrival of Daniele De Rossi as new manager.
The Giallorossi are in with a chance to play Champions League football next season after five years’ absence.
Roma have had a really tough calendar and have not been helped by Italy’s FA decision of making them play the remaining 20 minutes of the game against Udinese last week.
Yet, despite the polemics, the hosts managed to secure an injury time victory which could be of vital importance in the race for a top five finish against Atalanta.
No surprise the Giallorossi looked leggy in the first half against Napoli on Sunday, but showed nerves of steel as they managed to equalize, with a couple of minutes to go, after falling behind in the second half.
It was Roma’s 14th league goal scored in the last quarter of an hour of games and the third time, in the previous seven Serie A matches, that they rescued points right at the end.
But of course Roma have a mountain to climb if they want to knock out of the Europa League the unbeaten German champions of Bayer Leverkusen.
Games such as a European semi-final take a lot of physical and mental energy out of every team, and Roma’s excellent home record (they’ve scored in the last 33 home games in all competitions) might be dented by their midweek fatigue.
Nonetheless, since the change on the bench, the Giallorossi have travelled two times quicker than Juventus.
In fact, in the last 14 games, they’ve collected 30 points compared to Juve’s 16, scoring almost twice the amount of goals (29 vs 15) of Massimiliano Allegri’s side.
Roma’s last league home game ended in defeat (3-1 against Bologna), but Juventus are going through a very complicated moment.
Not only the visitors are winless in the last four games in all competitions but have only scored six times in the last eight matches.
The Bianconeri have Serie A’s sixth-best away attack (24 goals), as only 41% of their encounters overall have produced more than two goals.
Allegri’s men’s cautious approach away from home hasn’t paid off.
Only one (the 2-1 defeat in Napoli) of the seven games Juventus have played on the road against top sides in Italy has ended with more than two goals.
The rest have all been 0-0s (twice, against Atalanta and Torino) and 1-0s (four times, with two wins for the Bianconeri, in Firenze and against AC Milan).
Juventus seemed to have come out of the crisis that started in early February with the wins in Coppa Italia against Lazio followed by the 1-0 against Fiorentina.
But the scoreless draw in the derby against Torino, the 2-2 against Cagliari, thanks to a second-half comeback, and the defeat at the Stadio Olimpico against Lazio seem to have once again extinguished the Bianconeri’s hopes.
Juve are winless on the road since 21 January (3-0 against Lecce) and have one point less in the table compared to last season.
Last Saturday the performance against AC Milan, especially in the second half, was decent (Juve’s xG: 1.77).
But the fourth 0-0 draw of the campaign, which increased the gap from champions Inter to 24 points, has reinforced the doubts on whether Massimiliano Allegri will continue to manage the club after the summer.
Juventus have remained scoreless in the first half on 21 occasions this season, and they’ve taken the lead away from home only eight times.
Roma vs Juventus Prediction odds via bet365 as at 15:20, April 30th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
With the second leg of the Europa League semi-final only four days away, Daniele De Rossi will have to rotate some of his key players.
Kristensen will start at right-back, with Angelino replacing Spinazzola on the opposite flank.
Cristante should be confirmed in midfield, but Bove is in contention to play from the first minute. Up front, Baldanzi should play instead of Dybala, with Lukaku finally fully fit.
Federico Chiesa is expected to replace Yildiz, who started against AC Milan last weekend.
McKennie will return in midfield, with Cambiaso slotting at right wing-back. Filip Kostic will play on the left. Allegri will confirm the defensive trio made of Gatti, Bremer and Danilo.
Roma possible starting lineup: Svilar; Angelino, Mancini, Kristensen, N’Dicka; Pellegrini, Bove, Paredes; Lukaku, El Shaarawy, Dybala.
Juventus possible starting lineup: Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; McKennie, Cambiaso, Locatelli, Rabiot, Weah; Vlahovic, Chiesa.
