Davide Nicola returns to face his old club, but this time in the away dugout, and with that, we’ve got a Salernitana vs Empoli prediction, team news and lineups preview for you to peruse. Our expert, Nathan Joyes, is on hand to run the rule over the meeting, and pose the question of whether or not Empoli can continue their current impressive run in Serie A under new management.

Italy, Serie A, Friday, February 9th, 19:45 (UK)
Both Salernitana and Empoli are holding up the Serie A table, and if the hosts don’t turn up and win this, they will likely need to start preparing for relegation.
Salernitana has not only lost their last five matches, but they’ve also not won any of their last five home matches. However, Empoli are in a slightly similar situation, having not picked up a win on the road in their last five either.
It’s looking ever so slightly brighter for Empoli, who know a win will lift them out of the relegation zone with the advantage of playing on Friday evening.
Not only do Empoli have more to fight for with their stronger position, but results have been improving of late. A 3-0 romp over Monza was unexpected, yet deserved, before holding Juventus to a 1-1 draw on their road will have only lifted their confidence.
The game will no doubt come down to fine margins, and the hosts will be relying on their 36-year-old midfielder Antonio Candreva to bail them out once more. However, when he is marshalled well by the opponent, Salernitana struggles to create in front of goal.
Empoli’s Szymon Zurkowski has hit form of late, as he was responsible for all three goals vs Monza, having previously scored in their 2-1 defeat vs Verona. Their Polish star could tip the game in their favour if he continues to pose a threat in front of goal.
The reverse fixture saw Empoli come away with a narrow 1-0 victory, and with their form the better of the two, let’s take a chance with the draw-no-bet option at the current price.
Salernitana vs Empoli Prediction odds via bet365 as at 09:00, February 5th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
New signings Pellegrino and Vignato made the bench against Torino in the hard-fought 0-0 draw on the weekend for Salernitana. Both joined the action from the subs’ bench, and might have an outside shot at a starting berth here, though that’s something that may transpire in the upcoming weeks. Fazio and Gyomber missed the trip to Turin on the weekend and looks like they’re way off a starting berth as Salernitana readies a survival dogfight in the latter stages of the campaign.
For Empoli, this will be head coach Davide Nicola’s fourth game in charge. The former Salernitana boss is unbeaten in all three fixtures and will arrive on Friday desperate to get one over on his previous employers. Francesco Caputo will again miss out in forward areas for Empoli, though Destro and new signing Niang featured on the bench last time out with the former coming off the bench, suggesting there may be wiggle room for either to muscle into the starting lineup in upcoming fixtures.
Salernitana possible starting lineup:
Ochoa; Zanoli, Pirola, Pierozzi, Bradaric; Martegani, Maggiore, Basic; Candreva, Tchaouna; Ikwuemesi
Empoli possible starting lineup:
Caprile; Ismajli, Walukiewicz, Luperto; Bereszynski, Maleh, Grassi, Zurkowski, Gyasi; Cambiaghi, Cerri
