Early Bird Best Bets: Saturday, October 8th

In the next instalment of the Early Bird article at bettingexpert, we’ve got two picks in the Premier League before plunging into the fifth tier to explore Dorking Wanderers’ goal-heavy start to life in 2022/23. Let’s hope it’s another profitable one.

Chelsea vs Wolves Preview

England, Premier League, Saturday, October 8th, 15:00 (UK)

With a new manager in the dugout and the World Cup not too far away, it’ll be no surprise to see an upturn in performance levels at Stamford Bridge. The Crystal Palace comeback on the weekend was the perfect start to Graham Potter’s Premier League Chelsea debut in terms of the points haul, albeit it needed last-minute input from Connor Gallagher, of all people.

The pronounced lack of an out-and-out goalscorer may cost Wolves this season. It was a primary reason behind Bruno Lage’s sacking. That missing piece will likely continue to be a growing concern inside a Wolves set-up blessed with abundant talent and high-quality craftsmen available to compliment a number nine.

Diego Costa has come in and, in fairness, offered something different in his cameo appearance against West Ham. The header that fizzed past the post was a reminder that he’ll find those positions in the penalty area if his teammates can locate him. However, whether he can provide the answer to Wolves’ woes is a different question altogether.

Borne from their striker anguish is Wolves’ scarcity in finding the target. Only 24.7% of attempts at goal this season have worked the keeper or resulted in a goal. Only Nottingham Forest enters the weekend with a worse total. The average shot distance of 18.8 yards per attempt is second only to bottom-placed Leicester City, perhaps explaining the poor SOT statistics this term.

Now, considering Chelsea afford their opponents 9.86 shots per 90 – the fourth fewest in the division, Wolves will need to capitalise when they record a shot on target.

Chelsea vs Wolves Best Bet

Given we have a Chelsea side not exactly at the top level and adjusting to life under a new manager, I’m not expecting The Blues to blow their opponents away. Furthermore, looking at the most important statistic in games – goals – the lowly three scored by Wolves after eight games is the lowest in the Premier League, and that too should complement the unders angle.

  • Selection: Chelsea Win and Under 4 Goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.00 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 10/10

Brighton vs Tottenham Preview

England, Premier League, Saturday, October 8th, 17:30 (UK)

Roberto de Zerbi has waltzed into Brighton and grabbed the reigns of a Seagulls side in serious form. The Italian stated that his plans wouldn’t disrupt what Potter had put into place but instead add bits of his philosophy here and there to a top-quality team. That seems wise, given the showing Brighton just handed to an out-of-shape Liverpool side at Anfield.

Managing three goals at Anfield is some feat regardless of what type of Liverpool team presents itself. Spurs is next up, reeling from a North London derby defeat and a trip to Germany to get points on the board in the Champions League. There will be no doubt in the Brighton dressing room of getting on the scoresheet versus a potentially leggy Spurs.

Likewise, Spurs’ forwards will ensure Brighton’s backline will be kept busy. Not only do Spurs record 14.37 shots on average per90, but 40.9% of their shots hit the target – a world away from Wolves’ current figures. It shows that Spurs need few opportunities to create decent openings, with the 13.2xG from eight games providing an insight into how devastating they can be when it clicks.

Brighton vs Tottenham Best Bet

At 1.80, it’s a reasonable price for two sides who know where the net is. Spurs will want to bounce back domestically after the crushing Arsenal defeat. Brighton and their new gaffer? They’ll want to kick on towards clinching European football at The Amex next season.

  • Selection: Yes on BTTS (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.80 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 10/10

Dorking vs Altrincham Preview

England, National League, Saturday, October 8th, 15:00 (UK)

National League South bore witness to a rampant Dorking last season, with the Meadowbank outfit scoring the most goals in the league. The three-figure goal tally – 101 – in 40 games had Dorking 21 strikes clear of next-best, and eventual winners, Maidstone.

Not much has changed in front of goal. With 22 goals scored and 25 conceded after just 11 games, The Wanderers boast the loftiest match goals tally following their promotion. The 10/11 Dorking games that have overseen over 2.5 goals suggest we may be in good hands here. In the away dressing room, Altrincham’s 6/11 provides a decent enough total to compliment Dorking’s goal-fuelled approach to games.

Altrincham enters the weekend with just one point at the time of writing, with a visit to Gateshead pencilled in on Tuesday. The leaky nature of Dorking’s defence is something that’ll be front and centre of most managers’ thinking now in the National League. It could well provide Altrincham with their second victory of the season – that is, of course, if they’re able to shut Wanderers out at the other end. Not an easy task, mind you.

Dagenham & Redbridge show the difficulties of keeping a front-footed Dorking side at bay. A dismissal helped the 5-1 win at the weekend, though the scoreline should send murmurs of discontent through the terraces in Dagenham on Saturday. It adds to their previous winning six-goal haul at Maidstone (2-4) earlier in the season and three losses that produced a total of five strikes (3-2 vs Oldham Athletic(A), 1-4 vs Boreham Wood(H) and 0-5 vs Wrexham(H)).

Dorking vs Altrincham Best Bet

A 4.27 goals per90 match average is what Dorking supporters have been treated to in 2022/23. Their visitors’ 3.00 goals per90 total is another glowing indictment of why the over 2.5 goals price at 1.90 next weekend is one to get behind.

  • Selection: Over 2.5 Goals (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.90 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 10/10

Odds via bet365 and William Hill as at 12:00, October 3rd, 2022. Odds may now differ.
