Sam Ingram’s Early Bird Best Bets: September 10th-11th

Two favourites from England and a shed load of goals predicted south of the border in France. Here at bettingexpert, we’ve unearthed three early bird picks below that should gain traction ahead of next weekend.

In this article:

QPR vs Huddersfield Preview

England, Championship, Saturday, September 10th, 15:00 (UK)

Anyone can beat anyone in the Championship. We’re served up weekly reminders; look at Birmingham City taking 16 minutes to open the firmest of Preston deadlocks. It makes a foray into the second tier risky from a betting perspective. But as we saw with Norwich’s 1.80 to beat Coventry at Carrow Road, that unpredictability often harvests an attractive price or two.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Queens Park Rangers on home soil catches the eye. It presents similar circumstances to Norwich last week, too. The home side bound into the upcoming fixture in form, albeit their most recent result will ensure they approach Huddersfield tentatively, which is not the worst course of action to harness in the Championship.

New QPR boss Michael Beale has seen his Rangers side dispatch three solid Championship teams. With his managerial reign still in its infancy, all of Middlesborough, Watford at Vicarage Road, and Hull City have been swept aside in QPR’s opening eight fixtures. Two draws and two losses make up the rest, with Swansea getting the better of the capital outfit on Saturday. It was a tough day out in Wales. A saved Joël Piroe penalty and a well-worked set piece saw the Swans unlucky not to claim a more significant deficit come half-time.

On the other hand, Huddersfield are struggling. Town are a million miles away from the level of performances last season. With changes in the dugout and their best players vacating to pastures new, it was always going to be an uphill task. Yet, with the tactical inefficiencies backing up the limp personal performances littered throughout the squad, there’s only so long until the blame settles at the manager’s feet.

At the time of writing, Danny Schofield is still in charge of the Terriers, though an unsatisfied fanbase will likely be hoping that changes. And fast. After a game which saw goal-line technology fail and Huddersfield not awarded what looked like a legitimate goal in their defeat to Blackpool, perhaps sacking Schofield now would feel somewhat unjust. But, in fairness, the writing has been on the wall for a number of weeks. The cheaper, easier option of appointing the inexperienced number two won’t always come up trumps. It may even cost you a trudge towards a lower division.

Huddersfield occupies 23rd position in the Championship with four points. Only Coventry, who have played two games less, are below them. QPR away from home is a tough fixture, but the task magnifies when you’ve won once all season and arrive winless in four with the threat of League One looming so early. That 1.82 price feels generous and should see some action before next weekend.

  • Selection: QPR Win
  • Best Odds: 1.80 (William Hill)
  • Stakes: 15/10

Peterborough vs Forest Green Preview

England, League One, Saturday, September 10th, 15:00 (UK)

Only Burton Albion find themselves in a worse run of form in League One. The opening day victory in Bristol suggested Forest Green would be able to put points on the board in 2022/23 following promotion, but that thought process is steadily being chipped away at. Since then, four losses and a draw to the aggregate tune of 13-2 have cast doubts over Forest Green’s capacity to remain in the division.

There’s a notable fixture coming up on Tuesday evening. And no, it’s not Real Madrid’s trip to Celtic Park or Juventus’ mouth-watering tie in Paris.
Instead, before Forest Green heads to Peterborough on Saturday, Accrington Stanley is penned in at The New Lawn. It’s League One’s only midweek fixture and one with which Peterborough will be rubbing their hands together.

For The Posh, they’ll have seven days to prepare for Ian Burchnall’s FGR visit whilst a leg-zapping League One outing takes its toll in Gloucestershire. Two successive defeats prove it’s not all sunshine and rainbows at The London Road Stadium, either, although coming up short to Derby and Portsmouth is no disgrace. The loss in Devon against Plymouth Argyle paints a similar tale against a plucky Greens outfit that completed a three-goal comeback away in Derbyshire on Saturday. It may ask questions of their promotion aspirations, but Peterborough certainly won’t be the last side to be outwitted by the three playoff hopefuls this term.

Aside from the losses, The Posh have overseen four victories. The strikes past a ten-man Sheffield Wednesday were their most impressive, whilst hitting both Cheltenham and Morecambe for three and a downbeat Lincoln City for four. Jonson Clarke-Harris has continued to do what he does best in a Peterborough shirt; score goals. That lethality in forward areas has chalked up five in seven for the frontman, alongside strike partner Jack Marriot’s four. It’s a duo that should see plenty of joy this season, and one that will cause 90 minutes of concern for Forest Green supporters.

If that forward line clicks once again, we can expect more than one goal for the hosts to celebrate next weekend.

  • Selection: Peterborough Win and Over 1.5 Goals
  • Best Odds: 2.20 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 15/10

Angers vs Montpellier Preview

France, Ligue 1, Sunday, September 11th, 14:00 (UK)

Only Paris Saint Germain’s 24 goals scored in five matches stand as a more prominent goal haul than Montpellier’s 16. The Parisians have already met Montpellier, and it was a cracker, with their five goals scored and two in reply producing a superb advert for Ligue 1 football.

La Paillade are yet to blank in Ligue 1, scoring in each match. It’s a run that has continued without a suspended Teji Savenier and an injured Wahbi Khazri – two of Montpellier’s main goal threats. Without the creative double act in forward areas, Montpellier recorded the biggest away win in Ligue 1 history against Brest. The 0-7 scoreline turning heads throughout football. There was a red card in the game, but that came after a storming first half that saw five goals end up in Brest’s net. Montpellier managed eight shots on target in the 90-minutes, seven of which proved fatal for the home team; clinical.

Montpellier’s 7.0xG suggests that this campaign has been a destructively efficient start to life in 2022/23, scoring 16 times. That conversion rate isn’t something Montpellier will likely keep up for the entirety of the Ligue 1 season. Still, it does show the impressive ability to work the keeper under challenging situations.

Next up, a winless Angers on the road presents the next task for a goal-laden Montpellier outfit. With no win in six, four defeats on the trot, and four or more goals in their last five matches, it has been a frightfully tough few weeks for Les Scoïstes.

Angers vs Montpellier Best Bet

The Stade Raymond Kopa witnessed the away side come and put three goals past them during Stade Brest’s stay before Reims arrived and plundered four. It’s not a fortress by any means; proposing another breach could be on the horizon with the return of Montpellier’s big guns.

Last season, a 2.42 goals per90 average was what we could expect when Angers stepped foot on home soil. We’ll need a little closer to the 3.33 total that this season has ushered through the door for the suggested selection, one that looks a sensible pick on paper considering what August has provided in Ligue 1.

  • Selection: Over 2.5 Goals
  • Best Odds: 1.85 (Unibet)
