Weekend Early Bird Best Bets: Saturday August 13th

The Premier League is back with a number of surprises already coming to fruition. Fulham have earned a spot in the first Early Bird article of the season after a spirited showing in the capital, whilst Haaland’s debut plays out to a familiar tune 14 miles away. In League Two, Port Vale may be in for a rough ride as Bolton look to make it three impressive results from three.

Manchester City vs Bournemouth Preview

England, Premier League, Saturday, August 13th, 15:00 (UK)

Erling Haaland’s arrival has breathed new life into a Manchester City side already more than capable of thriving in the Premier League. Priced at 1.07 to register a win against Bournemouth next weekend, it’s evident how the bookmakers see the seismic gap between those likely to lift silverware and those tipped to drag their heels near the foot of the table.

Yet, Scott Parker’s Cherries raced to an impressive start to the season in Saturday’s curtain raiser. A Jefferson Lerma strike got Bournemouth off to a flyer on the South coast after two minutes, before Kieffer Moore’s header rounded off proceedings in the 80th minute. The perfect start, but one helped by a disjointed Aston Villa side who didn’t do anywhere near enough to threaten the destination of the three points.

Manchester City vs Bournemouth Best Bet

Next up, Bournemouth visits Pep’s rampant City side. The 1.07 is a no-brainer to swerve, as is the uninspiring -2.5 Asian handicap at 1.90. Instead, taking City to win in both halves represents an interesting avenue. Last season, City scored in both halves at home in 12/19. If you think that Bournemouth will struggle to get on the scoresheet, that’s a notable statistic. In terms of winning both halves, that occurred in 9/19 at home for City, bettered by Liverpool’s 10/19.

With Haaland hitting the ground running and plenty of question marks around Bournemouth’s squad despite the Aston Villa win, the 1.80 is worth considering.

  • Selection: Manchester City Win Both Halves
  • Best Odds: 1.80 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 8/10

Wolves vs Fulham Preview

England, Premier League, Saturday, August 13th, 15:00 (UK)

To best preview the upcoming second fixture in the Midlands, it may be wise to delve into the xG totals in both openers between the sides. Granted, xG isn’t the be-all and end-all, but it may give an idea of what either side is capable of bringing to the BTTS punt next weekend.

(1.15xG) Leeds 2-1 Wolves (1.12xG)
Despite the season-opening defeat at Elland Road, Bruno Lage will be disappointed to leave Yorkshire empty-handed.

Wolves’ 1.12xG was only just pipped by the hosts, though the 15 shots and lion’s share of possession will be a cause for aggravation considering the eventual scoreline.

Considering Wolves finished 19th last season for xG, the trip to Leeds must go down as an improvement in that respect. Without a recognised striker, as Raúl Jimenez (6 goals in 21/22) missed out through injury, onlookers would’ve seen enough to suggest Wolves can test Fulham’s resolve on Saturday.

In the absence of Jimenez, the re-emergence of a fit and firing Pedro Neto will significantly impact the squad. In addition, Gonçalo Guedes’ €32m switch from Valencia will also provide an additional threat in forward areas, precisely what Wolves require.

(1.26xG) Fulham 2-2 LFC (2.39xG)
The Cottagers showed a willingness to press as a unit and take the game to Jürgen Klopp’s Reds. As a result, it was almost as if they treated the six-time European victors as another Championship team to roll over. If Marco Silva can harness that exact energy in the press and readiness to get amongst the teams in the opposing half, Fulham will see any joy in front of goal.

Aleksandr Mitrovic’s double was not only a middle finger to his Premier League critics but also recognition of his opening day display. The Serb marksman was a handful from start to finish. Fulham’s 1.25xG was thanks mainly to a penalty win by Mitrovic’s direct dribbling and the first-half leap above Trent Alexander-Arnold at the back post – two finishes that suggest Fulham fans will assumably expect goals in the season ahead.

Wolves vs Fulham Best Bet

In Wolves, Fulham faces a newly-formed back four, reverting away from their usual five at the back. Central defender and club captain Conor Coady is close to Everton, highlighting the shift in approach as a defensive unit under Lage. If there’s ever a time to capitalise on a change of system and personnel, it’s now.

At the other end for Wolves, however, there’s plenty in the arsenal to cause problems for the Premier League’s newest club. If there’s a lack of goals on Saturday, it’ll be a shock.

  • Selection: Yes on BTTS (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.90 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 10/10

Port Vale vs Bolton Preview

England, League One, Saturday, August 13th, 15:00 (UK)

Port Vale’s 4-0 hammering at the hands of Exeter isn’t ideal preparation for Bolton Wanderers coming to town. Nonetheless, The Grecians were well worth their four goals on Saturday, Jevani Brown’s double ensuring Vale headed back up North with nothing but a whimper.

Bolton’s two League One jaunts so far have welcomed impressive results. A 1-1 draw away at promotion-hopefuls Ipswich Town was followed by a comfortable 3-0 showing against a usually-sturdy Wycombe outfit fresh from Wembley heartache.

Port Vale vs Bolton Best Bet

With money back in the event of a draw, the 0.0 offers a handy way into the match-up at Vale Park. At 1.82, it’s a price that should see some action. Given the start both sides have had in the opening stages of the campaign, it’s a selection that should be shorter come kick off.

  • Selection: Bolton +0 Asian Handicap (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.82 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 10/10
