Nottingham Forest were unlucky to miss out on automatic place after a fantastic transformation under Steve Cooper. They narrowly got past Sheffield United in the semi-final via a penalty shootout, and they will be looking to make the most of their opportunity to return to England’s top flight.
Huddersfield squeezed past Luton in their semi-final and they now need to defy to gain promotion to the league they were relegated from in 2019.
Swansea were comprehensively beaten by Brentford in last season’s playoff final, but they can often be tight and cagey affairs and I’m expecting this one to be exactly that. Forest haven’t been in the Premier League since 1999, and there is huge pressure on them to deliver after their long absence.

As previously mentioned, Forest come into this one as favourites and I’m expecting a certain degree of attacking impetus from Cooper’s men. Huddersfield have also displayed their prowess going forward in recent weeks, and that should continue here.
Two teams looking to attack should mean we see a good amount of goal kicks. Huddersfield’s play-off semi-finals saw 17 and 24 goal kicks taken; Forest’s saw 15 and 19. If there is an early goal, backing goal kicks will look even stronger as the other team presses hard for the equalizer, so I’m happy to add them to our bet builder here.
Another angle I’m happy to back here is tackles. Huddersfield’s previous two matches were very low on tackles due to the direct nature of their opponents Luton. However, Forest will be far more keen to keep the ball on the ground and play. The enormity of the occasion and the large crowd at Wembley encouraging the players to get stuck in should also help increase the tackle numbers.
Forest’s league matches this season are averaging 33.25 tackles per game, and their last meeting with Huddersfield saw 33 tackles. This meeting was in the FA Cup and the knockout nature of that game resembles the play-off final more closely than the league encounters.
Bet365 have the even money line at 29.5 for tackles. It is on the low side because Huddersfield matches average just 25.77 tackles this season, but I think this brings us good value for the bet builder.
Championship play-off finals have so much at stake with a place in the Premier League and all the riches that come with it awaiting the winner. This often results in the matches being feisty affairs, so adding the free kicks angle looks a good bet here.
The last three play-off finals have seen 32, 33 and 33 free kicks and adding over 24.5 of them to our builder gives us a good safety net in comparison to the numbers in recent years. The crowd factor that should aid our tackles also helps here, as some challenges will inevitably mistimed and lead to fouls.
Lastly, over four corners in the match for Nottingham Forest also appeals. They have averaged 5.54 in the league this season and this landed in both of the league meetings with Huddersfield. They only had four in FA Cup meeting, but Huddersfield should remain resolute here and force their opponents to shift the ball wide.
