Round two of Group C is a mouthwatering clash, and bettingexpert’s Nathan Joyes is here to provide his predictions for the Senegal vs Cameroon match in the AFCON.
The reigning champions delivered one of the best opening performances after a routine 3-0 victory over Gambia. Cameroon, on the other hand, were frustrated by 10-man Guinea.
In this article:
Ivory Coast, AFCON, Friday, January 19th, 17:00 (UK)
Senegal’s dominant display over Gambia was a statement victory to those looking to take their title away from them. Three goals secured all three points against Gambia, and despite them having a man sent off, nothing should be taken away from Teranga Lions’ overall performance.
Pape Gueye opened the scoring after a good passage of play, where Sadio Mane picked out the Marseille midfielder, after causing Gambia’s backline out wide.
The pace in which Senegal possesses will no doubt cause similar issues to Cameroon’s defence, who disappointed with a 1-1 draw with Guinea.
Cameroon’s defence was all at sea when Guinea were gifted the lead. If it wasn’t for Francois Kamano’s foolish red card on the stroke of half-time, they might have been able to hold onto a famous victory.
However, despite Cameroon’s equaliser, they couldn’t beat the 10 men, despite having 45 minutes with the advantage. Heading into a fixture they can’t afford to lose will no doubt generate some nervous energy, especially against one of, if not, strongest teams in the tournament.
What’s more worrying is that was Indomitable Lions’ third match in a row without a win, while Senegal are unbeaten in five, and haven’t conceded since their 1-0 defeat to Algeria back in September 2023.
The champions can collect another three points here and sail into the knockout stage.
Metz’s young Lamine Camara scored two wonderful goals as Senegal sank Gambia. He’ll no doubt be a key player for the current holders throughout the tournament with plenty of admirers watching on.
When looking at the prices, the 20-year-old offers plenty of value to strike once again, now having scored three goals in his last three international appearances.
With Sadio Mane, Ismaila Sarr and Habib Diallo causing havoc in attack, this has allowed Camara to push up when Senegal are in the final third.
His clever run and strike for Senegal’s second of the match showed his willingness to run beyond the attacking trio. This not only cemented his position for the next game, but also highlighted his influence throughout the tournament.
The way in which he positioned himself on the edge of the box for his second showed a high level of intelligence to receive the ball in a shooting opportunity. The finish was exceptional.
At 7.0, it only makes logical sense to trust Camara to deliver the goods once again.
Regardless of how good Senegal were in their opening match, it would be foolish to rule out Cameroon not scoring at all. In fact, Cameroon have scored in their last four matches against Zambia, Libya and three against Mauritius.
Although heavily frustrated against Guinea, Frank Magri’s header was superbly put away, aiming low into the ground and out of the goalkeeper’s reach.
Georges-Kevin N’Koudoi’s cross picked out the Toulouse striker in a crowded area, showing they are capable of getting in behind.
Cameroon will have their work cut out coming up against a defence which hasn’t conceded in their last five. However, none of those teams are anywhere near the quality Cameroon have within their squad.
Before those five matches, it’s important to note Senegal conceded one against Algeria as well as one against Rwanda. Their defence is strong, but it isn’t watertight.
With Cameroon fighting to position themselves in Group C, there’s every chance they can score their second goal of the tournament, even if Senegal prove too strong for them.
Senegal vs Cameroon Prediction odds via bet365 as at 10:00, January 16th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Both Senegal and Cameroon will be pleased to have finished their first matches with no fresh injury concerns to worry about. Senegal had the luxury of making all five changes with the points secured, while Cameroon held on until the 75th minute before three substitutes followed.
Senegal are likely to stick with the same XI which bulldozed Gambia, but Rigobert Song may go back to the drawing board after their disappointing 1-1 draw with Guinea – in particular their defence.
