A sleepy Sevilla outfit welcomes one of the league’s best as a new-look, star-studded Barcelona waltz into town. It may be too much of an ask for home supporters to leave the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan anything more than empty-handed, but the new arrivals in Seville may have a different script up their sleeve entirely.

Three games into the newest instalment of La Liga, and we’re faced with a Sevilla side limping into the weekend. Winless and on the back of a poor defeat to newly-promoted UD Almeria, it has proved to be a tricky start to life this term. Óliver Torres put Sevilla ahead after half an hour in Andalusia, before two goals before and after the break proved fatal for Julen Lopetegui’s men.
The painful 2-1 loss adds to a defeat at the hands of Osasuna on the league’s opening day and the 1-1 visit of Real Valladolid in Seville – another match where they went behind, if only for six minutes. Sevilla need to be winning their opening three fixtures if they want to keep pace with the top three, as they have by finishing fourth in the previous three seasons.
The 70-point tally from last season finished just shy of their Saturday evening opponents. Barcelona’s 73 points was ultimately out of reach of Atleti and Sevilla but still nowhere near the eventual runaway champions in Madrid. Now, Xavi’s Barca heads to the Estadio Ramon seeking a third win from as many games.
Incomings in the shape of loanee Kasper Dolberg and Adnan Januzaj will cover for the departing Lucas Ocampos in Seville, who decided a switch to Amsterdam is the next stop in his career. Dolberg, on loan from OGC Nice, offers competition to Rafa Mir, given his preference for playing as a central striker. And, hopefully, from Lopetegui’s perspective, Dolberg provides an injection of goals.
The Danish frontman enjoyed a relatively fruitful start to life in Ligue 1 in 2019/20 with 11 goals in 23, though only six goals in the two previous seasons suggest a winddown of efficiency in the South of France. A change of club and the league he calls home may just be what the doctor ordered.
It’s almost not worth highlighting Barcelona’s exploits in the transfer window, given the intense coverage encircling a bizarre summer in Catalonia. Nevertheless, regardless of the circus surrounding the club and the finances (or lack of) involved, the squad assembled by Xaxi is fit for purpose.
Barcelona’s start to the season alongside Raphinha, Koundé, Lewandowski, Kessié, and Christensen through the door should ramp up any expectations of scrapping towards La Liga silverware this term. Of course, given Real Madrid’s imposing dominance in Spain, one can expect Barca to fall just short in that respect, but Xavi’s squad shouldn’t be far off.
If Barcelona can navigate the weekend without a loss, the following four outings shouldn’t cause too much hassle. That pencils in what could potentially be an opening two months without a loss on the board in La Liga. That’s premature, of course, but it’s certainly attainable. Cadiz, Elche, Mallorca and Celta Vigo make up what should be a routine September in Spain, with the intriguing task of Viktoria Plzen’s trip to Spain and a jaunt to Munich in the Champions League.
With no card markets at the time of writing and any signs of value few and far between if attempting to side with anything Barca-related, we’ll have to be bullish on Barca’s chances here to generate a price worth taking. In the hope Barcelona mirrors their 1-4 showing away at Real Sociedad, a team on a similar level to Sevilla, the 1.80 price of a Barcelona win is first up.
Barcelona hit nine corners in the two meetings with Sevilla last season, averaging 5.67 per90 throughout the 2021/22 campaign. Away from home, that total lowered slightly to 4.74 corners forced from 19 matches. With Sevilla likely heading into Saturday’s match-up with a focus on bedding down and avoiding defeat first and foremost, we should be able to expect a flurry of corners here and there as a consequence of Barca pressure.
Both a Barcelona win and over 3 corners drags us to a backable 2.50 with bet365.
