The final day of the La Liga season sees 2nd place Barcelona look to extend their winning run over Sevilla, and with that Scott Thornton is on hand to deliver a Sevilla vs Barcelona prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.

It’s been a fruitless season for the Catalan giants and it promises to be a busy summer as they attempt to close the gap to Real Madrid. Sevilla, on the other hand, have had to settle for back-to-back mid-table finishes in the top tier of Spanish football. European football doesn’t appear to be on the horizon any time soon for a club that has won the Europa League seven times.

Sevilla vs Barcelona Prediction 1: Barcelona to Emerge Victorious

Spain, La Liga, Saturday, May 25th, 20:00 (UK)

It’s been an underwhelming season for Barcelona. They have been well off the pace in the race for the title and have had to surrender the crown to Real Madrid. The Catalans also crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-finals stage. Xavi’s men were also beaten in the last eight of the Copa Del Rey, condemning the club to a trophyless season. Despite the poor season, Barcelona have the quality to finish on a high by beating Sevilla.

Quique Sanches Flores’ side have lost their last three matches. Their last home match was a 1-0 defeat against a Cadiz side that have since been relegated. Sevilla are 13th in the table coming into the final match of the season. Their poor form at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium has been a huge factor in their poor finish. The team have won just six of their 18 home matches in the league.

Barcelona have won their last four matches against Sevilla and haven’t suffered a defeat in this fixture in the last seven head-to-heads. They won 3-0 on their last visit to this ground.

Sevilla vs Barcelona Prediction 2: Sevilla’s Dismal Run Against Barcelona to Rumble On

Xavi’s future at the club has been the subject of much speculation since he announced he would leave the club in the summer back in January. Barcelona have since convinced him to see out the remaining year of his contract but some media outlets are now speculating that Joan Laporta will dismiss the manager anyway. He will want his side to put on a solid display on the weekend to help quash those rumours.

Barcelona’s defence can be shaky at times but they have managed to keep a clean sheet in their last three matches. They have also shut the opposition out in four of their last six matches on the road. The two sides that scored in that run of away matches were Real Madrid and Girona.

Sevilla have scored an average of 1.27 goals per game this season, which is 0.05 less than the average goals for a team in a Spanish league match. Their scoring record against Barcelona makes for grim reading. They have scored just one goal in the last seven encounters between the sides.

Sevilla vs Barcelona Prediction 3: Lewandowksi is Still the Main Man

Robert Lewandowski has undoubtedly slowed down this season. The 35-year-old striker has netted 18 league goals, which makes him the club’s top scorer but he hasn’t reached the levels set in yesteryear.  Nevertheless, he has ruled out leaving Barcelona this summer and he is proving to be a valuable asset in recent weeks.

The Polish striker scored in his team’s 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano last weekend. The goal meant he has now scored five goals in his last five La Liga matches. He is the fourth top sorcerer in the top tier of Spanish football; only Bellingham, Dovbyk, and Sorloth have found the net with more regularity than the former Bayern Munich man. Lewandowski has also registered eight assists in the league, but it is his goals we are focusing on here.

Lewandowski found the net in Barcelona’s 3-0 win at this stadium last season. His underlying stats also suggest he has been reasonably clinical in front of goal. He is performing in line with his non-penalty xG of 14.48 for the season.

  • Sevilla vs Barcelona Prediction 3: Robert Lewandowski To Score

Sevilla vs Barcelona Team News and Possible Lineups

Sevilla will be without at least seven players for this match. Suso and Lamela will return to full fitness in time for pre-season. There are no return dates set for Sow, Gudelj, Torres or Romero. Lulo Dasilva’s ruptured cruciate ligament will keep him out until at least December.

Xavi will be able to call upon most of his key players but there are a few notable absentees. The cruciate ligament injury sustained by Gavi undoubtedly had an impact on Barcelona’s campaign. Alex Balde and Frenkie De Jong have also been on the sidelines for an extended period.

Sevilla possible starting lineup:
Nyland; Bade, Ramos, Salas; Sanchez, Agoume, Bueno, Acuna; Ocampos, Lukebakio, En-Nesyri

Barcelona possible starting lineup:
Ter Stegen; Kounde, Cubarsi, Martinez, Cancelo; Roberto, Gundogan, Lopez; Yamal, Raphinha, Lewandowski

Match Stats: Barcelona Deserve Their Favourites Tag

  • Since Quique Sanchez Flores came in, Sevilla have won four of their nine home matches in the league.
  • Barcelona matches have seen the third most goals in the league with an average of 3.24.
  • The Blaugrana have lost just one of their last 10 matches against Sevilla.
