Scott Thornton brings us his Sheffield United vs Burnley prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview ahead of the next round of Premier League matches.
The league’s bottom two sides go toe-to-toe this weekend. Three points is a must if either wants to keep their slim chances of remaining in the top tier of English football alive. Burnley are ahead of Sheffield United in the table, but they are running out of time if avoiding Championship football next term is a reality.
bet365 acca odds: 7.50
England, Premier League, Saturday, April 20th, 17:30 (UK)
Defeat for either of these slides would be nothing short of a disaster but a point also won’t suffice. Sheffield United trail Burnley by four points having played a game less. They haven’t tasted victory since beating Luton on the 10th of February and I’m backing them to lose once again.
Sheffield United have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League with an average of 0.94 per game. They have home advantage here but Bramall Lane hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Blades this season. The have won just two of their 16 league matches in front of their own fans and lost 10 of those. United are conceding an average of 2.94 goals per game over that period.
The Clarets hammered the Blades when the sides met at Turf Moor earlier in the season. They had 64% possession and managed 19 shots in comparison to Sheffield United’s six shots. Vincent Kompany’s side were ruthless and won 5-0. A win here would give them some hope that they can survive the drop this season.
This really is last chance saloon for Sheffield United so expect them to throw the kitchen sink at Burnley on Saturday. They may lack the quality to get the job done but expect them to get on the scoresheet. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals looks like a good bet as a result.
The Blades are averaging just 1.04 goals per home match in the league this season but they have managed to score five goals across their last two matches at Bramall Lane. Sheffield United have conceded an average of three goals per game in their previous ten matches, with this bet winning in four of their last five.
Burnley have conceded the third most goals in England’s top flight with an average of 2.06 per game. Since Christmas Day, they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their 16 matches across all competitions. They are conceding 2,06 goals per game during that run. Both teams have scored in five of their last six and those matches have seen 2.67 goals on average.
David Datro Fofana has been Burnley’s biggest goal threat since joining the club in the January transfer window. He has scored four goals for his new club but is likely to have more opportunities than usual as the Clarets take on the weakest defence in the Premier League.
Sheffield United have the highest xGA in the division, with an average of 1.95 per game. Jay Rodriquez and Zeki Amdouni started up front for Burnley in the reverse fixture. Both got their names on the scoresheet in that win. Expect Datro Fofana to do the same here.
Fofana has a non-penalty of 0.43 per 90 minutes played since joining Burnley. He is averaging 2.07 successful take-ons per 90 minutes played, which puts him in the top 5% in that regard when compared with all other forwards across Europe’s top five leagues. David’s ability to beat a man will come in handy against a side that has struggled to plug the gaps in their defence.
Sheffield United vs Burnley Prediction odds via bet365 as at 05:29, April 16th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Sheffield United will be missing several players for this clash. Tom Davies, George Baldock, Max Lowe, Norrington-Davies, Chris Basham and John Egan are all injured. Daniel Jebbison is due to return very soon. Jack Robinson is a doubt after sustaining an ankle injury but his participation cannot be ruled out.
Al-Dakhil could be in line for a return for Burnley this weekend. This game is likely to come too soon for Jordan Beyer and Luca Koleosho. Aaron Ramsey also remains sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury. He won’t return to the squad until next season.
Sheffield United possible starting lineup:
Grbic; Trusty, Ahmedhodzic, Holgate; Larouci, Ocborn, Arblaster, Hamer, Bogle; McBurnie, Brereton Diaz
Burnley possible starting lineup:
