The summer transfer window is coming closer and clubs are monitoring players all over the world to find players who might be able to reinforce their squad.
We sat down to have a talk with the former Man United defender, Mikael Silvestre, who shared his thoughts on possible Man United signings in the summer.
Silvestre elaborated that Man United should sign Harry Kane, snub Marco Verratti and keep a close eye on Jeremie Frimpong.
In this article:
Weghorst arrived at Man United in the winter and the Dutchman has been heavily criticised due to his lack of goals. Silvestre thinks he is an excellent teammate, but the Frenchman urges Man United to sign Harry Kane.
“When Weghorst first came everybody understood that the manager wanted him because he could bring more than just goals. His workrate for the team and him being a focal point is important.”
“But of course, goals are important for a striker and he hasn’t scored yet in the Premier League. But you can’t question his attitude and I´m always trying to look for something positive.”
“He is not that goalscorer that a lot of people are dreaming to have at Man United but he is working hard and I think he is an excellent team mate.”
“Since Cavani left, and then Ronaldo later, the club has been looking for a player that can score 30 goals, which is what you have to aim for as a top club.”
“If I should choose a player that Man United should sign, I would go with Harry Kane.”
Marco Verratti has been linked to Man United, as the Red Devils allegedly want to reinforce their midfield, but Silvestre says that he is too old and Man United should build for the future, even though he really like the Italian midfielder.
“I like Marco Verratti a lot as a player. He’s fantastic whenever he plays for PSG or for the national team but I think Manchester United has to go for younger players and build for the future.”
“You already have Casemiro and Christian Eriksen who are in their early 30s and Bruno is approaching his 30s soon.”
“So you need much younger players to build for the future.”
Silvestre also commented on the drop in performance recently for Man United, even though he doesn’t want to put too much blame on Casemiro as the whole team has dropped in performance according to him.
“I think it’s the entire team whose performance dropped. Everybody was below the standard expected.”
“I think Casemiro, it doesn’t matter who he’s playing with, but when the game is stretched and end-to-end, like it was against West Ham, he’s not a box to box player and his impact lessens.”
“He would have more impact when the attack is more organised and well-placed rather than rushing back and forth.”
Jeremie Frimpong has been linked to Man United as well, and the talented Leverkusen-fullback is a great player according to Silvestre, even though he claims that his defensive skills aren’t that strong, why he would only be a possible signing if Man United are getting rid of Diogo Dalot.
“I like Jeremie Frimpong. He’s very energetic and is good going forward. But again, the defensive side is not top, top level.”
“With Aaron and Dalot, it’s always a question mark, are they gonna defend well today?”
“So if Dalot was to go, there would be a place for Jeremie Frimpong to join but it’s to be seen. We have to see what’s going on.”
