Sunderland vs Newcastle Tip 1: Handy Hosts

England, FA Cup, Saturday, January 6th, 12:45 (UK)

It is fair to say that the jury is still out on Michael Beale. The coach has steered Sunderland into sixth spot after taking seven points from the last nine on offer but faces an uphill struggle to win the affection of the Black Cats faithful.

The former QPR manager’s reputation was tarnished as he abandoned the London club for Rangers a matter of weeks after declaring his commitment to the course at Loftus Road. Beale was left further bruised after a meagre 10-month spell in Scotland. After a brief sabbatical, it is important to note that Beale was not even Sunderland’s first choice and in comparison to Twitter sensation Will Still, Beale is certainly an underwhelming choice.

Nevertheless, he remains a great coach, and his philosophies appear to be in line with what Sunderland wants at the board level, so it could work out a great fit.

As for winning over the Stadium of Light faithful, a win over rivals Newcastle would stand him in great stead.

The hosts have certainly had the better of the recent exchanges, unbeaten in the last nine meetings, winning six of those, which includes the last three games on their own patch.

Backing Sunderland with a +0.5, +1.0 head start on the Asian handicap appeals.

  • Sunderland vs Newcastle Tip 1: Sunderland Asian Handicap (+0.5, +1.0)
  • Best Odds: 1.95
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 5/10

Sunderland vs Newcastle Tip 2: Clarke will tear Toon apart

Jack Clarke has found the net 19 times in 2023, signing off with goals in each of Sunderland’s last two games as the youngster has reminded everyone why Tottenham forked out £10m for him in 2019.

The Black Cats talisman has filled the void left by striker Ross Stewart, who departed for Southampton in the summer. This term, Clarke has found the net 12 times, a tally only beaten by three Championship players, Morgan Whittaker (13), Adam Armstrong (13) and Sammie Szmodics (16).

The over-reliance on young Clarke is unsustainable. The left winger has scored a third (12/36) of his side’s goals domestically, and with him posting a non-penalty xG total of 4.7, this streak may not last forever.

Nevertheless, the 4.33 about him to score anytime has to be worth a poke this weekend.

It is worth noting rivals Newcastle come into this clash after shipping a Premier League record xGA figure (7.27) against Liverpool.

Boss Eddie Howe is under increasing pressure, and with half a busload of the squad in the treatment room, his hands are tied at the minute.

  • Sunderland vs Newcastle Tip 2: Jack Clarke Anytime Goalscorer
  • Best Odds: 4.33
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stake: 5/10

Sunderland vs Newcastle Tip 3: Feisty Affair

This is the first time these sides have squared off for eight years. Aleksandar Mitrovic and Jermaine Defore got the goals in a 1-1 draw at St James’ in 2016. Sunderland’s midfield featured Jack Rodwell and the only survivor for either club is Jamaal Lascelles.

There were five cards that Sunday afternoon, and we could get a similar figure as the two reacquaint themselves this weekend.

Craig Pawson is the referee. He has dished out 78 yellows and three red cards in 17 appearances this term, averaging 4.90 in 10 Premier League apps.

Sean Longstaff’s price stands out at 6.50 to be shown a card. As I write, the same bet is as short as 4.00 with other firms.

The midfielder has picked up five in 12 league starts, which works out as a cards per 90 average of 0.38.

  • Sunderland vs Newcastle Tip 3: Sean Longstaff Card (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 6.50
  • Bookmaker: Sky Bet
  • Stake: 5/10

Sunderland vs Newcastle Team News Preview: No Tierney?

Patrick Roberts missed Sunderland’s win over Preston and will be assessed ahead of this fixture. If deemed unfit, Alex Pritchard will be hoping to keep his spot on the right. The midfielder opened the scoring against North End with a great strike from range.

The visitors may be without captain Kieran Tierney on Saturday. The defender missed the defeat at Anfield with a groin injury. The game also looks to have come too soon for Callum Wilson and Joe Willock. This will mean Alexander Isak continues to lead the line.
