The Premier League returns this weekend for one final ride before the World Cup break brings the season to a pause.
There is no ‘big game’ to look forward to this time around but some interesting ties lie in wait and could yet affect both ends of the table after this weekend.

Manchester City had to battle hard to defeat Fulham last weekend with Erling Haaland’s injury-time penalty recorded as their latest goal to win a Premier League game since November 2017. Manager Pep Guardiola felt it was one of their best performances since he took over as they played for more than 60 minutes with ten men before securing their third consecutive league victory.
While that dramatic late show confirmed an 11th consecutive home league win, the Cityzens still trail PL leaders Arsenal by two points. A win here against Brentford would lift them above the Gunners, even if only for a matter of hours, but potentially see them back atop the table through the World Cup break should the Londoners fail to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers.

For the second time in less than a week, Bournemouth play host to Everton but this time in the final Premier League fixture for both sides ahead of the World Cup winter break. Despite deploying a much-changed team from the one that fell to a 4-3 defeat against Leeds United a few days earlier, the Cherries proved too sweet for the Toffees in the EFL Cup and blew them away 4-1, leaving interim boss Gary O’Neil “delighted”.
Tuesday’s victory ended a five-match winless run for Bournemouth but they must now look to go again and secure a crucial win that could see them leapfrog Everton and pull away from the bottom three. Bournemouth ought to be confident, as not only do they hold a psychological edge from Tuesday’s win, but they’ve never lost a home game against Everton in five meetings.

Once the cornerstone of consistency, Liverpool have kept fans on their toes recently in Premier League action, with recent losses to bottom-half sides Nottingham Forest and Leeds diluted with victories over Manchester City, West Ham, and a 2-1 win over Tottenham last time out. Their inconsistency means they trail the top 4 by seven points, but manager Jürgen Klopp described their victory at Spurs as “massive” and will now hope to go into the World Cup break on a high.
Usually, Anfield would be the perfect place for the Reds to do just that, but after Leeds ended their 29-game unbeaten home run in the league, the home faithful might be on edge. Welcoming Southampton through the Shankly Gates should provide some encouragement though, considering Liverpool are unbeaten in the last eight home league head-to-heads while keeping clean sheets in the last six.

After Nottingham Forest’s big-money summer signing Morgan Gibbs-White insisted his side were “cheated out of three points” by VAR in their 2-2 draw against Brentford last week, the Tricky Trees are sure to still be smarting as they return to face Crystal Palace.
Perhaps that was the frustration talking for Gibbs-White, who knew three points against Brentford would have lifted them off the foot of the Premier League table.
Forest have just one more chance to ensure they don’t go into the World Cup break bottom of the league, and after going three league games at the City Ground unbeaten, they do at least appear in the right place to do so. Encouragingly, Forest have never lost a league H2H against Palace, but with this the first such meeting since 1995, history likely won’t have much bearing on the result.

Antonio Conte’s meltdowns are not exactly anything new, but the Tottenham manager continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons as his team’s Premier League campaign derails.
The feisty Italian has earned two cards in three appearances across all competitions, and as he continues to lambast a schedule he describes as “crazy”, the team that was considered title challengers by some in September have dropped to 4th after losing three of their last four league matches.
All five league home fixtures against clubs placed below Liverpool (who they lost 1-2 to at home in their last outing) at the end of the weekend have resulted in victory, by an average winning margin of 2.2 goals, so the arrival of Leeds United must be considered an opportunity to bounce back in their final game before the World Cup break.

David Moyes has been given a vote of confidence by West Ham co-owner David Sullivan, who insisted “we one hundred per cent support the manager.”
The pressure has piled on the Scot following a run of three defeats from their last four Premier League matches, including a 2-1 loss at home to Crystal Palace at the weekend, a result which pushed them down to 15th in the table and only two points clear of the relegation zone.
The defeat to Palace still came as a surprise though, as they had won their six previous home matches across all competitions. Yet that loss came after a midweek Europa Conference League game and after failing to win four of their last five league games after a European fixture, they might be glad that their continental adventure is now on hold till the spring. The visit of Leicester City now offers hope of a quick turnaround though, as the Hammers are unbeaten in the last four H2Hs (W3, D1).

Fulham While many Newcastle fans were cautiously optimistic coming into their first full season under Saudi ownership, few would have predicted that victory here against Chelsea would see them go into the World Cup break in 3rd place. In fact, having won their last four Premier League outings, Newcastle actually come into this clash six points better off than their visitors and fellow top-four challengers.
If things are looking up for Newcastle, then they definitely aren’t for Chelsea, who after being beaten 1-0 by Arsenal on their own turf last week were dumped out of the EFL Cup in midweek by Manchester City. Despite that elimination, boss Graham Potter insisted there were “quite a few positives”, but translating that into results now has to be the primary aim as they risk missing out on UEFA Champions League football.
That almost certainly means ending a four-match winless league run, and with seven victories from their last eight league games against Newcastle, maybe they are an ideal opponent to snap that torrid streak.

Only victory over league leaders Arsenal will give Wolves any chance of entering the break outside of the bottom three. Yet such a feat seems like a long shot considering Wolves’ only two home league wins this season were 1-0 victories against the other two sides beginning the round in the drop zone.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal ensured that London was as red as former player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s face after his controversial “it’s nothing personal” video ahead of last Sunday’s game against Chelsea that the Gunners won 1-0. As the only side to score in every PL game this season and with the joint-most clean sheets (six), Arsenal can ensure that they’re top of the tree for Christmas with one more win here!

It took a little time for Brighton & Hove Albion to build up a head of steam under new boss Roberto De Zerbi, but they have done so in style, recording three straight victories for the first time since August. That run began with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Chelsea and culminated in a 3-1 cup win over Premier League (PL) leaders Arsenal, a purple patch which lifted Brighton into the top 6 ahead of the round and secured their place in the League Cup round of 16.
It was a dream start to life in the Villa hotseat for Unai Emery as he oversaw an emphatic 3-1 home win over Manchester United in the league before being dumped out of the League Cup in a 4-2 defeat at Old Trafford on Thursday. With his focus now firmly set on the final PL game ahead of the break, Emery has boldly stated that he wants his new side to play with “the same style and the same capacity” in their away games as at home.

After coming from behind to defeat Aston Villa in midweek, Manchester United will have to put in another spirited performance to take maximum points against the Londoners.
Fulham have lost just one of their seven Premier League home games this season. They’ve already earned more points, won more games, and scored more goals at Craven Cottage this season than they did in the entirety of their last Premier League campaign.
It took a last-gasp penalty for Manchester City to beat Fulham last time out and United will have to think again if they are hoping for an easy ride at Craven Cottage.
