Rochdale vs Aldershot: Expect plenty of Shots fired as goal heavy duo collide

England, National League, Saturday, 15:00

With the last international break of 2023 upon us I have chosen to meandre into the English non-league for my Expert’s Acca selection. Rochdale welcomes Aldershot to Spotland Stadium, with both sides boasting identical figures in their respective goals columns.

From the opening 19 games of their National League campaigns, The Dale and The Shots have both seen 65 goals scored. Not only that, but the two teams have hit the back of the net an identical 33 times whilst conceding 32. An average of 3.42 goals per game.
This pair have combined to see 24 (63%) of their combined 38 fixtures feature over 2.5 goals – only six sides have a higher percentage. With 28 (74%) of those games seeing both teams score – a ratio only Chesterfield can top.

But I like to drill into the recent data, and those numbers increase. Of the two side’s last ten games, Rochdale has seen 80% feature three or more goals and 90% cash for BTTS backers. For The Shots, it is one game less on both counts, with 70% and 80% clicking.

You may also remember the recent FA Cup thrashing of Swindon, which Tommy Widdrington’s men handed out. They routed the League Two outfit on their own patch by an incredible scoreline of 7-4.

These teams only know one way to play, so the odds of 2.00 for Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score look mightily generous.

Liverpool vs Racing Montevideo: Hosts to maintain hot winning streak

Uruguay, Primera Division, Sunday 19th November, 13:00

Since Liverpool’s shock 1-0 defeat to Fenix, they’ve won seven matches in a row in all competitions. After nine league matches, they sit in first place, four points clear of Penarol.

At home, they’ve dropped just two points from five matches, scoring eight goals and conceding just once – although they still managed to win that match vs Wanderers.

Striker Thiago Vecino has been at the heart of everything Liverpool have done right of late, whilst 20-year-old Luciano Rodriguez has caught the eye. Forming a great relationship on the pitch has been key to their success.

Whilst Racing has managed to pick up points on the road this season, they head into arguably one of the toughest games of the season on the back of two away defeats on the bounce.

A 3-0 loss to Defensor Sporting as well as a 1-0 defeat to Oriental in the cup are rather alarming results. Facing Liverpool, who have won their last five league matches, is certainly not an ideal match to get back on track.

After a 98th minute heartbreak for my selection last week, Liverpool can hopefully get us back on track with a routine victory in front of their supporters.

Southend vs Chesterfield: Chesterfield appear unstoppable

England, National League, November 18th, Saturday, 15:00 (UK)

Southend have performed well so far this season and would be knocking on the door of the automatic spots if it wasn’t for their 10-point deduction. They have been exceptional on home turf. However, they are taking on the division’s runaway leaders this weekend.

Chesterfield are five points clear of Barnet, who currently occupy 2nd place. They beat their closest rivals 4-2 last weekend and Paul Cook’s side have the advantage of a game in hand. The trip to Southend is a tricky test but the price on offer for an away win is appealing.

Kevin Maher’s side have lost just two of their eight league matches at Roots Hall. Those losses were against Fylde, who are currently in the relegation zone, and a Hartlepool side that are languishing in midtable. They will need to be at their very best to stop a free-scoring Chesterfield.

The table toppers have won their last five league matches. Incredibly, they have suffered just one defeat in 18 league games; winning 15 in the process. Over that period, the team are averaging 2.16 goals and conceding 1.33.

Villarreal B v Andorra: Poor Defences Must Mean Goals

Spain, La Liga 2, Sunday, November 19th, 17:30 (UK)

With yet another international break, finding a selection was always going to be a little more tricky. Spain’s Segunda is where we are heading on Sunday evening as Villarreal’s youngsters host Andorra, that being the club, not the nation.

The home team has played seven games this campaign; a whopping 25 goals have been scored, with all of those achieving at least three goals. Only Mirandes have a greater number of match goals when playing at home; they have played an extra game, however. When Mirandes hosted Andorra earlier in the season, it ended 4-3.

Andorra have earned just three points in their seven away days, which could partly be down to the travelling. The commute to Villarreal is around 4 hours 30 minutes, relatively short, considering their previous two away days saw them travel 7 hours 30 and 11 hours, and that’s just one way via a coach. Andorra doesn’t have any Train Stations or Airports, which is not ideal for the football team.

Four of Andorra’s seven away days have seen three or more goals scored, they’ve shipped 15 times this campaign when playing in Spain. I expect the hosts to score with relative ease, given Eder Sarabia’s side have kept a single clean sheet, coming on the season’s opening day.

Villarreal have yet to keep a clean sheet at home, which makes this clash have all the ingredients for an entertaining affair. The goal line is set nicely at 2.25, meaning if there are exactly two goals, we receive half of our stake back. If the trend continues and another Villarreal home fixture witnesses three or more goals, the bet will win in full.

Italy vs North Macedonia: the Azzurri are on the brink

Euro 2024 Qualifiers, Group C, 17th November 2023, 19:45 (UK)

We have been here before. Sixteen months after the heartbreak in the World Cup play-offs, Italy must, once again, win against North Macedonia. Fiftyseven places separate the two sides in the FIFA Men’s Ranking, yet the Azzurri have failed to beat North Macedonia in the last three games.

To keep their hopes alive to qualify for Euro 2024 Luciano Spalletti’s side must get the three points on Friday and then earn at least a draw against Ukraine next Monday. Otherwise they’d have to go via the play-off route (cue the dramatic music…).

Despite getting well beaten by England last month Italy gave a good account of themselves at Wembley, especially in the first half where they showed some of Spalletti’s trademarks: high press, intensity and courage in possession.

Unfortunately Italy (unlike England) lacks the superstars that can change games and need to make up for this long-standing deficiency with a propositive style of play.
With time Spalletti could improve the national side and make them as entertaining as Napoli were last year, but for now he just needs to get the basics right.

The returns of Federico Chiesa, Nicolò Zaniolo and Jorginho to the squad are positive news as Italy will play in front of a sold out Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

North Macedonia have only lost one game in the last four, but their away form is poor: they lost 7-0 to England and 2-0 against Ukraine. Surely they can’t upset Italy again…

Sutton vs Tranmere: Have a gander at Sutton

England, League Two, Saturday, November 18th, 15:00 (UK)

A meeting between Sutton and Tranmere that could well be labelled as a six-pointer. Heading into this one, these two sides languish in the bottom three of the Football League pyramid, with the hosts bottom of the pile.

Yet, here I am tipping the U’s to bag on at least two occasions. That’s something they might need to do if they harbour ambitions of leapfrogging Rovers.

Matt Gray’s side may have started to turn a corner and are unbeaten in their last three in all competitions. They’ve scored eight goals in their last three home league games at Gander Green Lane, and although they fell to a 3-2 defeat to in-form Morecambe, they outshot the Shrimpers 20-9.

So, it’s three consecutive home league games that they’ve found the net two-plus times. They also did that in their FA Cup first-round tie over National League side AFC Fylde – certainly a confidence booster.

And what makes this bet more appealing is Tranmere’s miserable away record (P8 L8). They’ve conceded 17 goals across those games, an average of 2.13 per 90, with their opponents finding their net 2+ in six of those. Plus, they shipped four on the road in the FA Cup against League One Stevenage.

Nigel Adkins saw his side lose to Wigan on penalties in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, so had to get minutes into the legs of his side. Meanwhile, Sutton were able to kick back and take the week off to prepare.

With seeing a small upturn in form for Sutton in the last few weeks, then home advantage against a side who travel poorly could see them capitalise and put Tranmere to the sword.

  • Selection: Over 1.5 Sutton Goals
  • Best Odds: 2.00
