European Championships Qualifying Best Bets: Thursday, March 23rd

We have the best bets covered ahead of a busy Thursday of Euro 2024 qualifying. England also return to action as they take on Italy.

The dust has settled after the World Cup in Qatar. The attention now turns to the next European Championships. A number of Europe’s giants are at a crossroads. Spain and Portugal have a new manager and Germany looks set to do away with the old guard. There are also question marks surrounding England and Italy.

Italy vs England Preview

Thursday, March 23rd, 19:45 (UK)

England enter this next cycle with a lot to prove. There was significant pressure on Gareth Southgate after another failed major championship campaign. Many feel as though he is underachieving considering the crop of players he has at his disposal. This will likely be his last chance to prove his credentials.

Italy triumphed over England in the final of the last European Championships. However, things haven’t got smoothly since then. The Azzurri failed to qualify for the World Cup and have lost several key players. Roberto Mancini has bemoaned his lack of options ahead of this round of internationals.

Italy vs England Best Bet

England have a wealth of attacking talent at their disposal. Southgate’s side had 14 shots when they lost 1-0 to Italy in September of last year. England have also had 13 shots or more in the three matches where they have been similarly priced to win since the start of 2022.

Italy have had fewer shots than their opponents in eight of their 11 games since the start of last year. Their opponents are averaging 13.82 shots per game over this period. In fact, Italy’s opponents in the last five matches they have played have all managed 14 shots or more.

  • Selection: Over 12.5 Shots For England (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 2.10 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Denmark vs Finland Preview

Thursday, March 23rd, 19:45 (UK)

Denmark were highly fancied to do well in the World Cup. However, they exited the competition in the group stages after being beaten by Australia. They failed to win a single game at the tournament and were bottom of their group. Kasper Hjulmand remains in charge but significant improvements are expected.

Finland had never qualified for a major tournament until the last European Championship. They beat Denmark 1-0 in the group stages but finished behind them on goal difference. They come into Thursday’s match as huge underdogs.

Denmark vs Finland Best Bet

Denmark are solid when they play at home. They played four matches there in 2022 and conceded just one goal. They managed to prevent a rampant Fench attack from scoring as they went on to beat the then-world champions 2-0. They have six clean sheets in their last eight home matches and they should have too much quality for their opponents here.

Finland have won just two of their last 12 matches. They are averaging just 0.92 goals per game during that run. None of the sides they faced are currently above Denmark in the FIFA world rankings. The Danes should be solid enough to prevent the visitors from finding the net here.

  • Selection: Denmark To Win to Nil
  • Best Odds: 1.83 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Bosnia vs Iceland Preview

Thursday, March 23rd, 19:45 (UK)

Bosnia and Herzegovina haven’t played in a major tournament since 2014. They have every chance of qualifying from Group J but they need to make a fast start. The team are ranked 57th in the world by FIFA. They were 13th just ten years ago so it has been a sharp fall from grace.

Iceland famously eliminated England from the European Championships in 2016 but they haven’t qualified for the tournament since. Their last major tournament was the 2018 World Cup in Russia. They have an extremely small pool of players to call upon and this has hindered them in recent years.

Bosnia vs Iceland Best Bet

Three of Bosnia’s last four home matches have seen them win 1-0. The team had been on an awful run of form in front of their own fans but they look far more solid defensively of late. Their last 10 home matches have averaged exactly two goals per game.

Iceland’s only competitive wins since the start of 2021 have come against Liechtenstein. They have managed to draw their last six matches. I’m expecting this one to be a tight encounter with both teams lacking real quality in attack. Iceland’s matches in 2022 averaged 2.33 goals per game.

  • Selection: Bosnia Double Chance & Under 3 Goals In The Match
  • Best Odds: 1.95 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Odds via bet365 as at 11:30 March 22nd 2023. Odds may now differ.
